How Do You Sum Up Five Years?
We ate like men and we cried like women.
It was an unforgettable trip. One of laughs and equal amounts of tears. It was emotional to watch the show close out and subsequently, lose our little show in the process. We worked hard on our final episode, which is being edited now and will be released in a few days – but somehow that didn’t seem fitting enough to say our thanks as much as it did our goodbyes.
So how do I sum up five years? How do I say thanks to the hundreds of folks that have made this show happen, and the hundreds of thousands that have listened week in and week out? I can’t. There’s too many to name. Too many experiences to comment on. Too many things to be thankful for. Our credits in 175 will list a large part of the people who have made this show what it was in the last five years, but there are some who I would be remiss to not take this opportunity to thank in our final moments.
Tucker Colburn and Graham Hancock – Two of my oldest and most loyal friends. Thank you for believing in something that sounded stupid five years ago, and still sounds stupid today. Thanks for putting up with me, my wishes for the show, and always having the attitude of seeing it through to make it as fun as possible. Thanks Houston Longino and Will Cooper for shouldering some of the responsibility for a while, and laying the groundwork of what this show would ultimately end up being five years later.
Thank you to people who have been there from the beginning. Who have always given of themselves and volunteered their time to increase awareness and have a good time. Thanks Kim Jordan for always being a great friend and source of support and advice in our years of friendship, and your passion to want this small effort to succeed from the beginning. Thanks Brian Moseley for always being eager to serve and put forth your ideas and humor (and thanks to you and Troy for putting up with mine and Steve’s antics this weekend).
Thanks to people who we never really said enough thanks to like Allie Osterloh Michael Bailey, and Stuart Baldwyn (and many, many, many others) who were always happy to devote their time and talents to Starkville’s House of El. To guests like Brian Austin Green, Cassidy Freeman, Bryan Q. Miller, Al Septien, Turi Meyer, Justin Hartley, John Schneider, Alaina Huffman, Alan Ritchson, and too many others to name.
Thanks Susan Kesser and Suzanne Gomez and Marc Klein for always being in our corner.
Thanks to Robin Burdge for your humor, your good spirits, and for always wanting to do whatever you could for SHoE. Thanks to Brie for letting you be as available as you were for us, Robin. Thank you to Damian Holbrook for joining our project, after already being a full time journalist who probably didn’t want to talk TV anymore at the end of his day, but still always would and had a fun time doing it.
Thank you Joe Hummrich for your loyalty. Thanks to Liz for letting you come out and play. Thanks for your friendship. Your good heart. Your giving of your time. For always having my back, and for being a lifelong friend – even though I’ve only known you a short time.
Thank you Steve Glosson. Thanks for being my best friend. For laughing with me. For being my reality. For telling me what was smart and what was dumb. For keeping me grounded. For lifting my spirits. For burning yourself out on these shows, for finding yourself, and for coming back together for the end. Thanks for always being there for me and thanks for letting me be half a good a friend as you are to me. Thanks for being a part of SHoE. Thanks for letting me be a part of Geek Out Loud. Thanks for never letting me settle and always making me try harder to do what I want to do in life. Thanks for making SHoE what it was and what it ended on. Thanks for saving it, more than once. Thanks for bringing the funny and making the people keep coming back for more. Thank you for your laugh. It saves lives.
Thank you to my family and friends and coworkers who put up with this crap for years and are probably more than happy it’s over with.
Thank you listeners. Thank you for loyalty. Thank you for support. Thank you for five years of downloads. Tweets. Emails. Ideas. Laughs. Complaints. Rants. And Love. Thank you for listening. Thank you for watching. Thank you for loving Smallville with us. Thank you for taking the time to care. Thank you for recognizing we did this for free. For fun. For you.
Thanks for the videos and the emails and the tweets leading up to and following the finale – we’ll never be able to use all of the hundreds of them, but I wanted to share a few I saw here now. (including this one http://ihopeitsnotatrain.blogspot.com/2011/05/sixty-seconds-aint-gonna-cut-it.html)
Thanks for everything.
This wasn’t just another fan podcast – you found a way to bring the listening audience into the friendships you were developing with each other. Starkville’s House of El was very special and you will be missed by a great number of people. – Jeanne S.
Smallville and SHoE went hand in hand; I literally could not have one without the other! I could go so far as to say SHoE was one of the reasons why I kept watching Smallville…nearing the end of season 6 and the beginning of season 7, my interest began to drift; But Starkville’s House of El podcast made me realize that being a fan of a television show meant to take it for what it was worth, and to take in every episode without condition…What made Smallville so great over its 10 years of existence were not only those at the helm, but the fans included. You made the show what it was, and for that words really can’t express the thanks I give to you. So instead, I’ll bid you adieu and as Chloe would say…”See you in the funny pages.” – Erin G.
You have added so much to our lives and you are appreciated more than words can say. – Jason L.
What you guys did with this podcast was amazing…After each episode I looked forward to SHoE. Your show was informative and very entertaining. I hope you guys continue to do what you love and allow us, the listeners, to continue having a good laugh, learn some history, and laugh even more. – Kendrick M.
I can’t tell you how much this podcast has meant to me over the years…Your show made my day so much better. You could not even begin to imagine. Steve, you were a delightful addition to the show. Derek, I was so sad to see you leave and so very happy when you came back. Steve, bless his heart, could never get the titles right. Damian, Joe and Robin ya’ll made this last year very enjoyable so thanks to you also. I can’t do Twitter. I can’t make a video. I just wanted to tell you that everything you all have done for the fans has been appreciated by this one. Good luck to all of you in the future. You will be missed. – Laurie R.
I just want to say thank you to everyone who has ever made SHoE possible. Thank you all for all of your hard work and dedication, we are all fans of Smallville but you took it so much further. You guys have done such an amazing job over the years. Thank you so much for being apart of all our lives and for giving us a safe to place to geek out as we all went on this journey together. – @ricochetlives

You ARE great! Seriously guys, this has been an amazing ride, and I cannot thank you enough!
Seriously my favorite podcast ever, Sterek FTW :)
“Smallville changed my life more significantly than any other tv show and a lot of that is due to @SHoEpodcast – @DaneFromKC”
I couldn’t agree more. Smallville has left a huge impact upon my life, and I’d like to think most of that is because of you guys. I would watch an episode Thursday/Friday nights, then I’d refresh the SHoE homepage a least a dozen times over the next few days to see if a new episode was up. Many laughs have come from listening to the show, you have cheered me up in hard times, carried me through and helped me get through the day. For that, I thank you all, including you, Derek. God bless you guys, see you around.
I just wanted to say thanks .You guys r awesome ! I am gonna really miss listening to ya guys .You guys did an awesome job , words cant say enough thanx .Like Erin said u couldnt have one without the other Smallville and SHOE . I was not really a big comic book guy, thanks for the info on mythos made me start looking stuff up too.Oh yeah and Steve thanx for that last ep u put up on G.O.L. the sermon u did at ur church encouraged me during a hard time !Thanx again u guys Derek, Steve ,Damian , Robin, Joe and all the others involved !!
I have been an in and out viewer of Smallville over the years, but in Season 9 I tuned into Absolute Justice and have been hooked ever since. I only recently discovered SHoE this season. And really hate that I haven’t been listening to it for longer. It’s brought me so many laughs and a better understanding of the whole mythology. I’m now a true Geek because of Smallville and SHoE, and I LOVE it! I love your one-liner jokes.. “You ARE great”, “Say Jim” “Guilty” I’m so glad that I jumped back into Smallville when I did, because I got to witness the pure awesomeness that was the Finale, and when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I sat down with you guys for your LIVE podcast. Now that Smallville is ending, I plan to watch it from beginning to end eventually, filling in the many episodes that I missed. I know that your podcasts will be a great companion for me as a relive the episodes. I can’t figure out why I didn’t stay with Smallville for 10 years, because this show is so beautiful with its message of hope, belief, and at its core- great values. I think its a wonderful thing that the series brought together some amazing actors, directors, crew members, and fans that seem to me to emulate everything that the show was in their own real lives- spreading light and love throughout. And finally thank you to Derek for creating this show, Steve for your laughter and lighthearted humor…I love it when I get to hear you two together, its just perfect. Joe, Robin, & Damien, you guys are the perfect ingredient to add to this recipe. It’s wonderful listening to all you guys together. Something GREAT happens when the five of you come together…and as someone pointed out in the Ustream chat the other night…you are the FAB FIVE!
You have touched our lives, and in the greater scheme of things, that’s all that matters. People should always be good to each other. We are a group of like minded individuals, that are spread out over the U.S. and beyond…who have never met but still feel like friends! That’s all you guys – you did that! You did something very, very special.
I’ll miss SHoE, but I feel very confident that we haven’t heard the last of the SHoE crew in some other format.
Thanks for the memories!
I started listening to SHOE in late in season 8. I love reading the boards and hearing others opinions. Thanks for all your hard work (but it seemed like you had fun doing it) putting the show together.
You guys are, and probably will be, my favorite podcast. You guys were the first podcast I listened to and it felt like I was talking with friends from the get go about SMALLVILLE. Derek, Steve, and Graham: I had the pleasure of meeting you guys at Dragoncon 2008 and it was a great time. Thanks for letting me hang with you guys that night. Also, thank you to Steve and Derek for letting me co-host an episode of SHOE (”RABID”) It really meant the world to me. Thanks, guys.
As someone who got into SHoE while going through Film School to be a screenwriter, I just wanted to say thanks to Derek, Steve, Damien, Joe and Robin for being the group of guys just having a good time that showed me the entertainment industry can still be a fun and wondrous place as long as you choose to see it that way.
Honestly, if it wasn’t for all the work you guys do, I would’ve never learned the valuable lesson to always have fun with everything that you do and for that piece of advice, my work and I cannot thank you enough. So I wish everyone at SHoE well with their future endeavors and sincerely hope that one day down the road we can become friends.
Truly wish it didn’t have to end. THANKS GUYS!!!
It is hard to sum up 5 years. Just like it is hard to sum up 10 years with the show. You put so much time into liking something, it almost becomes a part of you. Ive said it before it is like losing a dear friend. Thank you for the times of enjoyment you brought your many fans. There comes a time though when its time to turn out the lights, and it is happening now to all of us. None of us will ever forget these times. Smallville and its characters were part of each of us in many ways, just like your show. We as fans truly appreciated all you did for us. Thank you from every CLark Kent/ Superman fan out there. Please let us know where we can follow you after your last broadcast. thank you again.
man this sucks now i dont have a podcast to listen to on my way to work :(
It is because of you that I feel like I was watching this show with friends. I never had anyone in my life that I could talk about Smallville with but listening to you guys I knew that I wasn’t alone. And it is because of you guys that I have found other Podcasts to listen to. You made me feel like part of a community and for this I thank you deeply from the bottom of my Heart.
I ALMOST, almost gave up on SHoE right after my initial listening, not because of the content, but because a certain element was way over the top. That’s right, I’m talking about “Echo”, the first EVARS episode of SHoE I listened. Then I checked out earlier episodes to prove myself wrong on the over the top audio. To my relief, the wonky audio in “Echo” was purely an accident. Looking back now, it’s ironic that Steve, one of my biggest reasons to tune-in to SHoE regularly, almost single-handedly drove me away due to a hilarious blunder.
Ever since then, watching Smallville without SHoE became impossible. You guys managed to increase my enjoyment of a handful of Smallville episodes by explaining comic-references of characters appearing in said episodes that I might not have appreciated at all. No, don’t let me stop here. Y’all need to be commended for this past season. As season 10’s mainly centered around Clark becoming Superman, it frustrated me (just a bit) that they did not develop one of the main driving forces of the season: Darkseid. I knew nothing about Darkseid, but SHoE was here to explain everything. *applause* I’m still getting chills imagining the end of Smallville banter on SHoE; that’s how bad@$$ you guys are!
All of us began this journey with Clark Kent 10 years ago. 5 years into this journey, we were given SHoE. Ever since then, Smallville and SHoE have been entertwined with one another. As we antesipated the next episode of Smallville, we looked forward to the next installment of SHoE. Thank you Derek, Steven and everyone involved for making the last 5 years a blast to be a Smallville and Superman fan. I believe 15 years from now, when we are watching reruns of Smallville, we will all remember the great times we had with SHoE. SHoE will never end as long as we keep loving, and charish what the SHoE crew have accomplished.
I haven’t been around for a few years, but after watching the finale I wanted to drop a line and thank Derek, Steve, Graham, Tucker, Houston, and Will. I’m proud to be one of your first listeners and I wish all of you well in the future.
It would of been great for you guys to do a running commentary on the finale…Thanks for all the great work you guys. Looking forward to the final podcast.
Guys and Edna,
You were my gateway podcast! I found you about 4 years ago while cruising the internet for Smallville news. I loved the spoilers, the insider points of view, the new vocabulary (geekwood, man tears. . . ), but most of all loved the personalities. Listening to you bond, cry and laugh made my evenings. I can’t tell you how many times I had tears rolling down my face and having to explain to my kids how you cracked yourselves up and how that would crack me up! No jokes, just guys laughing at each other.
I will always remember my first podcast with tears of joy! You have my best wishes for all your future dreams. Edna, don’t forget to turn out the lights!
So SHoEligans it turns out Lord Darkseid and his acolytes will destroy the world after all if this rapture is true. :O)
NO DISASSEMBLE SHOE PODCAST!!
i know you all were thinking it
Guys, I would continue listening to SHoE even without Smallville. In all honesty, there have been many instances in which SHoE has been more entertaining than the actual Smallville episode. I listen to SHoE simply because the dynamic between the hosts, particularly Steve and Derek, is magical.
What do you guys make of this Bombshell Announcement about the future of Superman and the DC Universe that Geoff Johns and Jim Lee will be making at the Hero Complex convention in early June?
My wishful guess is that DC will cut ties WB and partner with another studio that knows what they are doing and know when to just step aside and let those that know what they are doing run the show… :)
@TJ Oh,you don’t even “know” how right you are! WB is still organised in a way that it’s divisions(video/dvd,tv,feature films) compete with,well..in fact against each other, wherein at the end of each fiscal year their soul purpose is to be able to show relative progress success, profitwise.Relative part meaning not just relative numbers,as opposed to absolute, which is only natural since tv cannot ever compete with movies that way.,but meaning relations between divisions as well.In practice that means that in order to be able to do that,to get sufficient funding for the next year, they oftenly not only compete in a healthy manner, but go up against each other using all sorts of methods, not just honorable ones. That is of course nothing unusual in relations between studios, but in their case that is happening within the same studio.Quite oftenly causing stalemates and blocades of projects, instead of achieving the opposite goal, that sort of competition was initially set up for
MGM did not diversify enough, which among other reasons led to it’s bancrupcy…WB diversifies too much and in a wrong, already so outdated way.
So,yeah you’re right, idealy DC should take their rights to another studio. In reality, things aren’t that simple though. But who knows, regarding this thing they’ve had plenty of time to resolve the nasty, property stuff.
I wanted to thank you guys for a great many years of Smallville coverage. I unfortunately didn’t start with you guys right away, but once I found it I was hooked. I couldn’t wait to hear what you guys had to say. I was always ready for great insights, banter, and of course laughter. This is exactly what a podcast should be!
Thanks for everything and to all of the players involved. Good luck with everything you do in the future! I better get a pizza!

Thank you guys for years of service to a cause that has restored hope n people, a light in the midst of the darkness. You have inspired us Up, Up and Away.
P.S Guilty! :)
I apologize for the lateness of this post I’ve just been busy. In a few short weeks I will be graduating with my bachelor’s degree and I still have a lot of work to get done.
However, I wanted to let the brain trust (Steve, Derek, Joe, Damian, Robin, Kim Jordan, Mossdogg, Graham Hancock, Graham Tracey, and Tucker) how much this podcast has meant to me over the last four years.
Like I’ve said in many previous posts on this website when I got my 80 GB Black Microsoft Zune, Zune had just gotten podcast support and I, like many of my fellow SHoEligans had seen the featurette on the sixth season Blu-ray set entitled “Big Fans” with the original SHoE line up and I thought to myself one night I was sitting in the same chair at my desk sitting in the same office I am right now just staring at my HP Laptop looking at various podcasts on the Zune Marketplace and I saw Starkville House of El listed and I thought “What the heck, why not?” I still remember the podcast ep. my first one was “Traveler” Steve had just come onto co-host. My first impressions was first of all how funny Steve and Derek were, but more importantly how thorough the review of the ep. was and how passionate they were and still are about this podcast.
I still remember the first time and the ep. podcast my name and an e-mail was read on SHoE it was “Eternal” and Kim and Derek were hosting for that podcast I distinctly remember pausing my Zune at the time and rewinding to make sure it was my name being read and still to this day I do that, lol.
I’m very honored about my time with this podcast I mentioned this in my video for 175 I never really had a hobby before SHoE and I wouldn’t have made the friends that I had made if not for SHoE and I think the biggest honor for me was being named Superman of the comments by @Michael J. Petty a title I still do not believe I deserve at all. I just try to post news or helpful tips that might benefit the listeners. This may be the end of SHoE but this ride isn’t going to end just yet. GOL here we come!
New poster- old lurker. I’ve listened to you guys on/off for YEARS, back in the days of the Fab 5, who were lost in the phantom zone, back during that weird civil war, which I still don’t get but no blood was shed so no harm, back when the Lone Ranger lost his Tonto, back to cheer when the dynamic duo reunited, back when Chocolate Pie floated way in the sky, and finally back when the Heroes castaway was given shelter and a piece of meat. I’ve LOVED every minute of it!!! As a diehard devotee, (there for the pilot, got every season box set on its own special shelf with space reserved for the 10th) I must say you guys enhanced the geek experience 20 fold. To steal a quote, only because it’s perfect- you ARE great!
Every Friday I would watch Smallville and the next week I would wait for the new podcast. I will miss you guys like I missed round 3 when it went away or Steve when he left for a bit (or like when a fat kid goes to fat camp and misses cake). All of you have made Smallville that much more than just a show. I hope to catch Geek Out Loud and though it wont be SHOE I hope to get the same hilarity that you guys have brought me my 2-3 years of listening. From beginning to end 10yrs of never missing a beat on SM. I’ll miss it as much as I will miss SHOE. But I am disappointed in you Derek of all the thanks you threw out you forgot one important person. Poor Edna, after all she’s done. At your beck and call and she cant get a shout out. Man that sucks maybe the Chloe is Lois fans were right after all NOT!!
Peace boys, see ya in the Action Comics
I think this is the step in the right direction. Only time will tell. http://www.usatoday.com/life/comics/2011-05-31-dc-comics-reinvents_n.htm
I will say this, even though I just downloaded the new GOL to my iPod Classic, nothing will match SHoE in my eyes. No offense to Mr. Glosson.
Yeah, I here a lot of whining about the revamp but I think it could turn out pretty cool (though I know they will bring back the numbering for Action and Detective fast).
And I listened to GOL before Smodcast.
Guys…. where do I start? Thanks are most definitely in order to all of you who worked on the show, as well as, those of you in the comment section here… Over the last 10 years we have enjoyed sitting down and watching what some of us would consider to be our favorite Character brought to life. During the past 3 years THIS show “Starkville’s…….House….of El,” has been one of the few things I could depend on for sanity. Being fired from my job, as a result, getting kicked out of school, and then of all things my wife ran off with my dad (which ended up in divorce court)… So when I say thank you, please understand I mean that from the very depths of my heart. You all have made my days a heck of a lot easier to handle… I look forward to hearing that familiar banter on GOL and of course the replays of my favorite SHoE episodes even though I am finding it difficult to acquire a few of the older ones… Thanks again everyone, have a blessed day.
I’ve been downloading all the past episodes of SHOE podcast from itunes but there are few episodes from season 7 of Smallville, podcast episodes 61, 62, 65, 66, and 67, that doesn’t seem to be downloading. Does anyone know if those episodes are available for downloading anywhere else? I really would love to listen to those podcast episodes.
If by any chance Derek, Steve, or anyone else from SHOE reads this, I really would appreciate it if one of you guys would re-upload SHOE podcast episodes 61, 62, 65, 66, and 67 for downloading.
Thanks guys for doing this great podcast. I found this podcast half way through season 9 of Smallville, first episode that I listened to was on Pandora, and I just fell in love with it. You guys rock and will really miss the podcast. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this podcast and best wishes to all you guys in your future ventures, whatever they may be.
COOL!!
