Who Will Return for Episode 200?

brainiacFollowing up from our last article, a bit of news that was probably best suited to come straight out of Comic Con this Sunday, has now hit the news.

James Marsters, aka Milton Fine, aka Braniac, will be reprising his role for the 200th episode of the final season entitled, ‘Homecoming’. The title of this episode could mean a lot for several characters from the series that have left us, and I doubt Braniac is the only big suprise awaiting when 10×04 hits. Brainiac (as far as James Marsters goes) was last seen in the seventh season finale, but the character lived on through the Fortress of Solitude and Chloe Sullivan in season eight, until he was removed by Clark and the Legion.

Marster’s fan Facebook page broke the news this morning. My gut tells me this was one of the big casting announcements we would have been hearing in Sunday morning’s panel. Is this good news or were you expecting something else for the 200th episode of the series? Sound off!

  1. MJ says:

I love James Marsters. I think he’s brilliant in whatever role he plays and I think he did a great job on Smallville back in Seasons 5 and 7. So, for me, this is GREAT news.

I also know that James Marters, like Laura Vandervoot, has been openly saying how much he would LOVE to come back to the show. And that goes a long way for me. At this stage in the game, I only want people on the show who truly WANT to be there. So I’m thrilled he’s coming back.

My only request is that I hope that he finally gets to share a scene with Lois. Because Spike and Lois have to be in a scene together at least once if only because Lois would have totally been Spike’s kind of woman. lol

    Thrilled to have James back!

  2. Derek says:

I’m deleting any comments that refer to him as ‘Spike’ out of pure righteous indignation, fyi :)

  3. MJ says:

Derek, were you not a Buffy fan? LOL

I can’t help it. He will always be Spike to me. Just as I’m sure if Tom Welling goes on to any other show after Smallville I’ll have no choice but to always call him Clark. :) He could play a cocky bastard and I’d probably still go, “Oh man….Clark Kent is great in this!”

Truthfully though, I think that Marsters is just a very fine actor and a cool person and I think the throws himself completely into any role. He really seemed to embrace his time on Smallville and he’s had nothing but nice things to say about Tom and the entire production. So I’m happy that he’s back.

  4. Mario Lopez says:

I could not be more stoked that James Marsters is returning. I always enjoyed his portrayal of Brainiac and can’t wait to see ‘how’ they bring back his character. Season 10 could be the best yet.

  5. Thomas says:

Glad to see Marsters coming back. I agree with MJ, its good to have actors coming back that really want to be a part of the shows ending. Like everyone else (I think), still holding my breath for a Rosenbaum announcement. I won’t be upset if it doesn’t happen but it sure would make things feel complete.

  6. Matt W says:

I love marsters but i was hoping braniac stayed dead after season 7

  7. Tim says:

Yeah! Now I actually hope it’s more Brainiac than Brainiac 5! I love Marsters in this role! Any theories about what his return will hold?

  8. Woo says:

@MJ Derek on several podcasts has voiced his dislike of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Dollhouse” even though he enjoyed “Angel” and “Firefly”.

As far as Marsters return I am very happy. Brainiac is always a useful character in the sense that he cannot truly die. I don’t know what he will do in the 200th I hope Callum Blue returns as Zod after hearing this news because I have always wanted to see Zod and Brainiac have scenes together.

All and all great and exciting news. I have been a fan of James Marsters since his “Angel” and “Buffy” days so I am glad Kelly and Brian brought him back.

Brainiac: “The original Android App.” Lol.

  9. MJ says:

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Honestly, I love these podcasts but I don’t commit the things Derek and Steve say to memory. I mainly just listen for the Smallville stuff.

Well, I didn’t like Dollhouse either. But I did enjoy Buffy very much. Oh well. To each their own.

  10. Woo says:

@MJ Well, anytime Derek and Steve go on a rant, a tagent or get on a soapbox I remember it more.

  11. Tim says:

@Woo Same here, lol. It would be cool if for one episode, Phantom Zone Zod possessed Callum Zod, so we can merge them. He could also destroy New Krypton, as they would probably not have powers to fight him. I don’t want Clark to go to New Krypton, but since Marsters is returning I doubt we will see Brainiac 5 with the Legion. So Kara, instead of going to the future, could just go to leave to live on New Krypton. Thoughts SHoEligans?

  12. Natasha says:

I’m with MJ and the rest who are opening their arms to those that truly want to come back. I guess I just don’t have patience enough for those that are adamant about not returning, therefore I don’t really care if they return or not. But Jonathan, Kara, and Brainiac are more than welcome. Also Martha and Perry are just as welcome.

  13. Keana says:

I just want Lex back :O(

  14. Woo says:

@Tim Here is a way they could explain Brainiac to still be a villain. It is has already been established that the black ship that landed in 4×22 and 5×01 was Brainiac in a physical form. True, Lex did say in the seventh season what was left in that small test tube was all that remained of Brainiac but remember when Kal-El fried Brainiac into little bits of molecules from Brainiac flew above him. One of those little bits could have survived and grew and stayed hidden in Smallville. And who is to say when Brainiac took over Chloe in the eighth season who is to say he didn’t during this time; he didn’t make a copy of himself and stashed it somewhere in Smallville and just got reactivated somehow.

I just don’t know if people would buy a “Brainiac 5″ especially all they could do with the Apoklips story line and or Kara or possibly bringing Callum Blue as Zod. There is so many ways Marsters as the villain Brainiac could be used.

Two side notes: 1) Wouldn’t that be like the best Android smartphone commercial ever… “Want to destroy an entire planet and strip it of all its knowledge?… Introducing the Brain InterActive Construct App available for download at the Android Store. Lol.” 2) For the SHoEligans who have Android Smartphones, Sony PSP’s, Nintendo DSi’s Palm Pre’s, or RIM Blackberry phones who want to use said devices as a portable media player there is this software called “DoubleTwist” and you can sync any one of these devices at the same time and listen to podcasts such as Starkville House of El and sync your photos, videos, and music. All you need is a Windows or Mac computer and a USB cable that is compatible with your device. Here is the website:

http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Home/Index.dt You have to set up an account with them but the software is free let me know if this worked well for you SHoEligans.

  15. Tim says:

@Woo Ok, my fears have been put to rest. I have an iPod, but your news blurb reminds me of the Media Junkyard episode with Derek and Kim, “Who the F*ck is Gil?” which they had Superman Returns trivia. They discussed it during the casual tech segment, and gave us one of the funniest lines, “Who the f*ck uses a Zune?” Which started a funny argument.

  16. Woo says:

@Tim I really need to listen to that ep. what number was that podcast? And as far as my post about DoubleTwist, just trying to be helpful for those who currently don’t have an iPod or a Zune who want to listen to the podcast on the go because I love this podcast and I respect we will just call them “The Brain-trust.” And to be quite honest to quote B.A.G. I consider a lot of you guys on the post my friends. Still want to know who that Houston guy is? Lol.

New Topic: Favorite Starkville House of El quotes mine are: “Who is “Houston? “Too late for Chocolate Pie” and the classic “Mole.” What are my fellow Zune, iPod, and Android SHoEligans favorite quotes?

  17. pendragon says:

@woo IA. I’d have loved to see Braniac and Zod interact as well. But honestly, even if they just made some reference to Braniac intending to merge Clone!Zod and Phantom!Zod, I think I’d be happy with that because it would kind of nicely resolve that and imply potential future probelms for superman. I just think there’s already so much in the works for Season 10, that as much as I want to see a lot of things explored, I’d rather have them focus on producing one or two solid arcs than ten short and half-developed ones.

  18. Woo says:

@pendragon I could see your point and I agree I would want two really solid season long stories. Rather than a lot of micro stories similar to what Miles and Al did in the sixth season.
