New DC Animated Titles Coming Soon!
DC has done a fantastic job with their direct-to-DVD movies in recent years and the next two releases look to continue that successful run. There have been some misses along the way, Green Lantern: First Flight and Wonder Woman did not achieve the level of success that I’m sure DC was hoping for. However New Frontier, Crisis on Two Earths, and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies were very successful in the eyes of DC. The next two animated films have me very excited mainly because the stories that they are based on are some of my favorites.
BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD
Loosely based on the Batman story arc “Under the Hood”, the story follows Batman and Dick Grayson – the original Boy Wonder now hero Nightwing – finding themselves being stalked by a mysterious yet familiar figure known as the vigilante Red Hood, who tries to rid Gotham City’s crimes without following the same ethics as its heroes and apparently knows all of their secrets. As the Dark Knight tries to unravel the true identity of his stalker, he must also battle three of his enemies: the Joker, the criminally insane Clown Prince of Crime who first wore the Red Hood cowl and was responsible for the murder of Batman’s second protégé Jason Todd; Ra’s al Ghul, the immortal international terrorist who is somehow connected to the Red Hood; and Black Mask, the notorious kingpin who is launching a campaign to take over all of Gotham City’s criminal underworld. When the Joker becomes involved in the conflict between Batman and the Red Hood, hard truths are revealed and old wounds reopened.
The main cast will be voiced by Bruce Greenwood as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Neil Patrick Harris as Dick Grayson/Nightwing, Jensen Ackles as Red Hood
The cover alone gives me the chills, Batman: Under the Red Hood is set to be released on July 27th, 2010
SUPERMAN/BATMAN:APOCALYPSE
There is no official synopsis for this yet, so I will give you the stroyline for what this DVD is to be based from. Remember this is a sequel to Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and the events in that story play a very BIG part in what happens in this next movie.
In “The Supergirl From Krypton” (issues #8-13, illustrated by Michael Turner), the Kryptonite asteroid is revealed to hold a pod that contains Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El. Batman says her arrival is too coincidental. Wonder Woman abducts Kara to Themyscira to train her for combat. Darkseid kidnaps Kara, intending her to be the new leader of the Female Furies. She is rescued from Darkseid and taken back to Earth. The villain follows; seemingly killing Kara at the home of Jonathan and Martha Kent. An enraged Superman throws Darkseid into the reality-spanning Source Wall, entrapping him. However, Kara is back in Themyscira and is introduced to the world as Supergirl.
Personally I expect a lot from this feature. Michaels Turner’s unique style of art is one of the reasons i love this story so much. I expect that they will take some liberties with the script, but I don’t think, that they will veer too far of course from the source material.
It has been announced that Tim Daly will be reprising his role as the voice of Superman, Kevin Conroy as Batman, and Summer Glau will be voicing Supergirl. Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is set to release on September 28th,2010.
Leave a comment below and let us know what you have enjoyed about DC’s DVD line so far and if you are looking forward to these upcoming titles. What would you like to see in the future from DC? Do you have a favorite storyline that you think would make a good animated feature?
As always, you can pre-order these two titles from Starkville’s House of El, and support the podcast and this website in the process. S/B Apocalypse is not yet available for pre-order, but we will alert you when it is. Click below to order your copy of Batman: Under the Red Hood now from Amazon!

Can’t wait for Superman/Batman: Apocalypes…Funny that DC is releasing direct to dvd movie with the storyline involving Darkseid and Smallville appears to be involving the exact same villain in it’s final season. Coincidence?
Is gonna be CGI or is that just for the cover?
I love these movies. LOVE them. Bruce Timm and his team own my heart for continuing to bring us these awesome DVDs (and I have every last frickin one of them). I actually really really liked the Wonder Woman feature, especially considering she never really interested me before, but so far Public Enemies has been my favorite (mostly because the bromance between Superman and Batman will never not be awesome to me…and I love Jeph Loeb and his weird yet awesome writing style), but Crisis is also kick ass as well. Whatever, I like all of them and I hope that even after Apocalypse that Team Timm will keep this franchise going.
Sweet, I can’t wait. By the way, they are also doing a Green Lantern:Emerald Knights movie from what ComicBookMovie.com said.
Looks like they will be good. And can’t wait to see what they do with the S/B Apocalypse story. And look! Jensen Ackles in Under the Red Hood! I don’t know how much his voice will be able to enfluence the character. But hey, look at Conroy and Daly, they have done AMAZING work with they’re characters! Also looking foreward to SUMMER GLAU as supergirl. And again, LOVE DC Directs work, despite what was “expected” of wonder woman and first flight. Anywho, thanks for the heads up! Had no idea this was going down.
P.S. Didn’t Neil Patrick Harris do the voice of the Flash at one point or another? Was it in New Frontier?
Yes, Neil Patrick Harris was the voice of the Flash in New Frontier.
These need to be done as DC Universe Animated Movies:
Identity Crisis
Batman: The Killing Joke
Superman: Up Up And Away
Blackest Knight
Flash: Rebirth
Teen Titans: The Judas Contract
Alex Ross’ “Justice”
@ Michael, I absolutely agree especially with your first three. I think Blackest Night might be a given, and the Judas Contract was already done on the Teen Titans series (a series which I really enjoyed), but since it wasn’t Team Timm, they could still probably do it.
@Michael…
I whole heartedly agree that DC needs to make Blackest Knight for their next dvd. That would be awesome to watch.
iam so excited KIara is in a movie yay Summer Glau will do awesome shes a great actress i prefer Laura Vandervoort but Summer has proved as River and Cameron that she is a deep actress that knows what shes doing. can
“t wait for this to come out.
So, any news on the next podcast? I know you’re sick of the question, but I don’t think it’s ridiculous to ask at this point. Even a quick tweet/post as to what the hold-up is would be greatly appreciated.
I’m sure you wanted to have some special guests/interviews for ep 150, and if that’s what’s causing a delay, I’ll just say this: comparatively, those things aren’t a big deal, and I’m really just interested in hearing your take on an episode that I’m sure you were both geeking out about.
If it’s something personal that’s causing a delay, then sorry for pestering. I’m just anxious to here about what I consider to be the best finale for a Smallville season in years
i hope you guys are ok iam getting worried to season 10 will be starteing soon and they still have not done the season 9 finale yet i hope you guys are not ill or something.
looks good (my bro told me about this movie and the green lantern movie look at my blog “The Bermuda Triangle Gateway to Atlantis”)
my bro is Michael J. Petty
They did a really good job with Public Enemies, and ever since I’ve been waiting to see the next in line. I guess they changed the title to avoid some confusion… the graphic novel is just called “Supergirl”.
I am really excited to see the same artwork being used and Summer Glau as Kara.
