@Lois sidekick? – Lois Lane on Smallville is not the Blur’s sidekick – she’s more than that. And if you don’t understand that dynamic, you don’t understand the relationship between Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane in any other incarnation.

Oh, and I have one more thing to say to all the “Chloisers” out there – Erica Durance plays THE Lois Lane in the Smallville universe, and Allison Mack plays Chloe Sullivan, her cousin – that’s a fact.
Thinking that Chloe will miraculously transform herself into Lois Lane is silly, childish and to be honest – delusional.
So, the fans of the “Chlois” theory – prepare yourself for great disappointment, because the iconic Lois Lane, played by Erica Durance, isn’t going anywhere.

  2. MJ says:

@Woo, the Chlois theory is about shipping. It’s always been about shipping and anyone who tries to argue otherwise is lying through their teeth. Clark Kent, (and in a deeper respect Tom Welling) became a prize to be won for many of these fans a long time ago. Chalk it up to the fact that he’s so attractive that it’s driven fans batshit crazy. Lois ends up with Clark in the end;therefore, Lois must be hated and bashed and picked apart. The only reason these people wanted Chloe to be Lois is because she ends up with Clark. It’s like winning a game or something. If Clark ended up with Lana, they’d be arguing that Chloe was the real Lana. If Clark ended up with Lori Lemaris, they’d be arguing that she should be Lori. (Ironically, I’ve always felt that Chloe was much more like the comics version of Lana than the actual Lana that we got on Smallville but that’s another story for another day.) Make no mistake, this insane theory has everything to do with shipping. I had never even heard of it until I started participating in Smallville fandom a year or two ago. I liked Chloe for a long time. She was a great original creation and I enjoyed her presence in the story in the early seasons. She represented the friendship that Clark would seek out in his life partner without the romantic passion. (Straight out of the mouths of Al and Miles.) But Chloe is Chloe. And other than an early interest in journalism (which by the way Lana also shared in the comics for a while), she bears not one personality quirk or iconic characteristic that defines Lois Lane in the modern Superman canon. I’ve been reading Superman comics since I was a kid. I know Lois Lane when I see her. She’s a pain in the ass with a heart of gold. And I say that with absolute love for the character. LOL And Erica Durance is without a doubt, Lois Lane. I agree with Steve that she’s probably the most likable Lois Lane ever written. But Clark’s words are really relevant when you are talking about this character. “Lois is just so….Lois.” or “Well, you’re…..Lois.”

    Anyway….back to the episode.

Does anyone have any theories on what Maxwell Lord’s role will be in Hostage?

Also, do we think that Lois will let Clark know that he’s “enough” in Hostage or Salvation? Any thoughts?

  3. smallville_fan says:

@Woo, I guess it’s a way of Chloe getting Clark at the end of the day and driving away with him into the sunset when all is set and done. Now they know the only person that Clark will have “A happily ever after” with is Lois Lane and naturally they hope for Chloe to take up the name of her cousin after Lois is killed horribly. Confusing I know but it is the most ill-contrived scenario I’ve ever come across in my 30 yrs of watching television.
This has also led to them hating and bashing not only the character of Lois Lane but the actress that plays Lois Lane. There seems to be a lot of Chlois fans that believes this theory and I try not to argue with them since the main focus of argument for them is the only iconic trait for Lois Lane is her love for journalism.
There are many people who love Chloe and who in the early days wouldn’t have minded if something little happened between them but that was in like season 1 and by season 2 I started rooting for chloe and Pete. It pretty much is a crazy bandwagon and I guess surpotting the theory makes you feel cool, edgy and artistic or maybe I’m too young to understand the youth of nowadays. Just my tuppence worth :)

  4. smallville_fan says:

Sorry for the errors. It’s as a result of trying to type a quick reply while at work.
@MJ: Thanks for putting down what I meant to say very eloquently

And I meant to say i’m too old to understand.

  5. MJ says:

@Smallville_fan, thanks. And don’t ever apologize for being “old.” Ironically, according to the demos the average audience for Smallville DOES skew a little bit older. Much older than the usual age for shows on the CW. That’s why it’s so funny that so many of the Smallville fanatics in the Smallville fandom are so young. They don’t accureately represent the maturity or viewpoint of the majority of people who actually watch the show. Interesting huh?

The funny thing is that I’m 27 year old woman….so technically I’m in the CW’s “target demo.” Yet, Smallville and Supernatural are the only shows that I have any desire to watch on that network.

As for supporting the theory making you “edgy” or “artistic.”–Personally, I just think it makes you ignorant of the actual Superman canon and dismissive of the 70 year source material that this show is based upon. :)

And yes, the biggest problem with this theory is that it has resulted in vile and horrible treatment of Erica Durance. Which makes me very very angry. It’s equally as disrespectful to Allison Mack because why would a true fan of Allison’s ever think that she would want people acting so horribly in her name?

    Anyway….back to the episode. :)

  6. Tim says:

Chloe is not Lois. Smallville is awesome. That is all.

  7. James says:

@Woo I don’t think you’ll ever going to get that clarified, because I don’t think those shippers know themselves what they want and even if they do,whatever it is it’s just insane as Natasha said!

    @Natasha,Paloma and Chrissy..I couldn’t agree more..respect

@kathleen You couldn’t have said it better..my thoughts exactly and that is especially thrue after “The crisis of infinite Earths” which mythology Smallville has started to follow really thruthfully in their own original, refreshing, modern and really great way..I have every faith they are not going to dissapoint and are going to deliver!!And yes..Erica is the best Lois ever.,now i’m certain of it and even before in earlier seasons when her character wasn’t as explored and important as it is now..she always used to bring out the fun in Clark

  8. CHLOE IS NOT LOIS says:

“Chloe, from the inception of the show, was always intended to be Lois’ cousin. The idea that she would turn into Lois, was NEVER going to happen.”-Al Gough and Miles Millar, the official season 7 companion.

  9. James says:

@MJ I think that in hostage Lois is going let Clark know he’s enough cause she definitly doesn’t want to loose him too,but in salvation since official CW description is that she’s gonna confront him and ask him to come clean about everything and he will refuse I don’t really know how she’s gonna take it and what’s going to happen with them, but it will certainly be interesting to say the least..plus there is so many crazy stuff that’s gonna be happening in the finale..I’m sure it’ll be dramatic and spectacular to watch!

  10. James says:

The idea that Chloe would turn into Lois is the most rediculuse thing I’ve ever heard as a tv concept..there are some theories about that happening out there and I’m still not sure how exactly that would work or be introduced into the show, but I’m amazed just how far some so called fans would go to see their insane theories come thrue!Anyway the absolute worst thing about all of it is bashing the actual real life person, the actress Erica Durance who plays the role of Lois and doing an awsome job at that in my opinion. That is just pathetic and lame..childish actually!

  11. MJ says:

Let’s get back on topic guys. People who are nasty are better off ignored. :)

This would have been a cool episode to have commentary on for the DVD. But I think that’s already been finished at this point.

  12. Kimmie says:

This would’ve been an interesting episode to have a commentary as well but maybe Erica will address some stuff in the Idol commentary. But ya never know they might be keeping this commentary under wraps because one it is directed by Brian Peterson and even though Tom And Erica might not do a
comentary they might also get Don Whitehead & Holly Henderson to co-commentate. It would be incredibly fascinating to hear their thought
process on the whole triangle for two.

Also wanted to point something. I saw a fanartist who took the faraway shot of Lois and Clark facing each other on the DP rooftop with the night sky and Metropolis skyline as the backdrop and he enhanced the blue of Clark’s shirt but I could sworn it looked like Lois and Superman standing there. The only thing missing was the billowing red cape. But it just looked so iconic.

  13. James says:

Yeah..it’s been finished..Erica is doing “The Idol”,Calum Blue with Turi Meyer “Kandor” and there may be a commentary for “Absolute Justice” although it hasn’t been revealed who may do that one,or two depending on how you look upon the two parter..
Anyway..next episode mama Kent and Perry White..him working on a story about Kendorians together with Lois..seems like another great mythos episode..they are on a roll..can’t wait!

  14. Natasha says:

It is no secret that I’m looking forward to Hostage more than Sacrifice for obvious reasons (but I will definitely be watching Sacrifice). I think it’s going to be awkward for Clark and Lois, but they will still be together. I’m going to assume that everyone here knows who the guest stars on Hostage are, so I think that Martha is going to have heart-to-hearts with Clark and Lois individually. Maybe it will end happily for those two even if there is still no secret reveal, but they might come to an understanding to try to mend this slight tear in their relationship. I think it’ll be a small but significant part of the episode that will lead into what (I’m seriously hoping) might take place in Salvation. I’m also hoping that Perry and Lois’ investigation into the Red Queen leads them to Martha, but I’m prepared for it not to be her…though I really really want it to be.

As for Salvation, I actually have high hopes for the finale. A question towards AL Septien that he answered on Twitter is rebuilding my trust that the finale will portray Clark as the clear hero who had a good plan that was followed through and makes him look like the Superman he almost is. I don’t have a single problem with the guest heroes that are expected to make appearances because with Zod and his small group of super-powered Kandorians, Clark will definitely need help. But I want it to be Clark that leads; I want it to be proto!Superman’s example and moral code that will be validated.

I’m not asking for much, really.

  15. James says:

@Natasha I think Lois and Clark will be or stay together in Hostage and since Martha and Perry are coming as a couple, him investigating the Red Queen and Kendorians with Lois would turn out to be pretty ironic if Martha really is the RQ cause it would turn out that in fact in a way both Perry and Lois are actually investigating their significant others..As far as salvation goes I’m sure it will be spectacular..I’m expecting possibly the best season finale of Smallville ever and Natasha you’re not asking for much..I’m sure you’re not going to be dissapointed!
Considering the relationship between Lois and Clark in Salvation unlike Hostage there might be some more drama since for the reasons I’m not going to reveal if you haven’t red the description of the episode that CW released..she’s gonna confront him to come clean about everything and he’s going to refuse..Where will that lead the two of them we can only guess.

  16. Sarita says:

    @ IT DID NOT SUCK

thank you! I’m tired of all these little kids (not on here, other sites) b**chin’ and complaining about Friday’s episode. Golf claps to BP for a stellar directorial debut. I’m kinda glad that the elevator scene played out the way it did (classic old TV feel) and the 3D Blur model was excellent. I am kinda ashamed to admit that when 9:01 rolled around I locked myself in my room (where my family couldn’t see/make fun of me) and cried for 46 minutes. Pathetic, I know, but I couldn’t help it! The Blur/Lois/Clark triangle mirrors the Superman myrthos in so many ways and I absolutely love and hate that fact, all at the same time.

  17. Sarita says:

Did ya’ll hear about YOUNG JUSTICE? awesome! can’t wait!

  18. Sara says:

As long as I get some random Chlollie moments I’ll be very happy. But I am really looking forward to these last few episodes. Is it Friday yet?

  19. Natasha says:

@ James, I did read the description because I’m a spoiler whore. I really need it to be Friday already. (That and the fact that I get paid!)

@ Sarita, I did hear about Young Justice and I can’t wait.

  20. James says:

@ Sarita Don’t you cry tonight…you cried yourself a hole another episode..if they mirror superman mythos right and I believe they will..it’s all gonna be fine and every teardrop worthed..Now I’m being pathetic..sorry!

  21. Woo says:

@MJ I think as “Edgy” goes, I think this has been the darkest season since Season 3, this is just the way I have viewed the season. With Chloe and her personal stuff whatever her hang-ups are. I defended Chloe, but this is getting ridiclous how many times Kal-El has apologized to her and given her props. To Lois, really going into the belly of the beast with Metallo with Roulette, with Chism, with Sacs, and of course with Tess. With Ollie’s fall from grace and subsequent rising from the ashes. The Zod scenes especially in “Rabid”. And of course, Tess getting way over her head. I hope they lighten the stories up just a little next season.

  22. @Woo I hope they do too. You’re absolutely right about it being darker than Season 3 (season 3 was very dark for a high school show). I think they will lighten it up. Clark (as it has been rumered) will wear glasses all the time next season and will go back to the Red-Blue Blur. Zod will most likely be gone and if I had to guess, as much as I hate to say it, so will Chloe (and/or Tess). Lois will probably have a bigger part as well, and I think Oliver will end up going to Star City around the middle or towards the end of Season 10!

  23. James says:

I’ve read some of the other posts on other threads and forums and it’s clear to me that people over here understand the show and not just the show, but the entire superman canon better than anywhere..the very point or the core of it..you guys are great..and some like Natasha or MJ amaze me with their eloquence..MJ I don’t know what you do in your real life, but I supose and in a best possible way it has to do something with words..you could be the advocate of the group..

  24. Natasha says:

@ James, Like Big Honkin says, “I just take this [Superman canon] so seriously!” But SHoE is one of my safe havens where I know I can talk about Smallville and Superman without having to deal with bashing of characters or the actors that play them. Plus we respect each other’s right to love the characters we love. That’s a true Smallville fan.

In other news, IT’S COMIC BOOK DAY TODAY!! Time to break open the piggy bank!

  25. Rocco says:

Did anyone else notice that after they got off the elevator and stopped kissing, Lois said that the kiss makes her lose concept of time and space? Kiss of forgetfulness. I KNEW he had that power!

  26. MJ says:

@James, Thank you for your very kind compliment. In my real life, I’m a law professor. I’ve also taught both English and Writing Comp. to Undergraduates. So yes, “words” are a huge part of my job outside of Smallville fandom. :) But I blame my education for my constant need for people to state facts about the show with accuracy and to back up their arguments with factual evidence. Yes, there are many things about this show and Superman that are subjective. However, in general, if someone’s “opinion” is based on something that is at its core a distortion of the show canon or simply incorrect than one’s opinion loses credibility. :) Not sure if that makes sense. But thanks again!

Can we just take a second and talk about how incredible Tom Welling and Erica Durance were in this episode?

It’s pretty amazing how far Tom Welling has come as an actor. He has such a presence about him now at 33 years old.

Tom and Erica sell a very realistic relationship. They make drama real.

It’s funny…I saw someone on another board say that they didn’t like the “angst” because it wasn’t “iconic legendary Clois.”

First off, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Anyone who is familiar with Superman canon, knows that Clark and Lois’ relationship has had bumps in the road in EVERY version of the story. That’s true in the films, LnC and especially in the comics.

Second, the comment just made me laugh. Do these people know ANYTHING about relationships??? ALL relationships, even healthy and happy ones, have rough patches from time to time. Adult Relationships are HARD. Even happy marriages have days when you just can’t get on the same wavelength with the other person. (Trust me, I know.) Arguments can be HEALTHY because they bring issues that need to be resolved to the surface. Taking a step away from the person you love can also be healthy because it gives you time for reflection and honesty about where you both stand.

Fans got so used to the endless back and forth between Clark and Lana for 7 years that it’s like they are afraid of real drama now. But angst is not always bad. It’s only bad when it doesn’t result in CHANGE or in a resolution to a problem. Clark and Lana never seemed to be able to resolve their issues no matter how many times they tried. That’s a signal that it’s not a healthy relationship. But an argument with a lover is not a bad thing per se and it can be a very GOOD thing if you learn from it.

Tom and Erica sell that kind of drama very well together. I believe that they are trying to make it work and coming up short. But then again, you are talking about two actors who have known each other for a long time now and who have both been married for a long time in their personal lives. I’m sure they both have an understanding of the fact that sometimes you need to fight to make things work with the person that you love and that sometimes you have tough days.

But I’m sorry…if anyone out there is comparing what we saw last week to the Clana angst (or worse yet, longing for the Clana angst AKA: arguments that never really got to the heart of the issue) then I question your concept of adult relationships.

  27. Sarita says:

    @ James

We can all be pathetic together. lol. ; D

  28. James says:

@Professor MJ..I’m actually a law student..so you teach your students about truth, justice and american way or..kidding!
First off it makes perfect sense, because you may or may not like something but if you’re using incorrect facts or arguments to back up your claims or theories, your opinon really, substantially does lose credibility!
Secondly..oh yes..Tom and Erica really are fantastic..their on screen chemistry is just right and real!!Much more so than clana thing and I’m pretty new at this show(not superman) cause for a long time I just refused to give it a shot,my girlfriend finally talked me into it and now I’m more addicted than she is..so I’m in a good position to compare, because I’ve gone through all the seasons basically over last summer and was ready for season nine with all or most of you! I never had a problem with Erica or her character..even back when Clark was miserable and obsessed over Lana.,Lois was great to me and was bringing the fun out of him..they worked so good together back then and especially now!
This Lois is a woman I would fall for I guess, but that IS just my opinion..she makes him happy instead of miserable over and over again, they laugh together, she respects, supports him and gives him space even though she doesn’t know his secret..yet!
Finally about concepts of adult relationships..most of people you are talking about probably never had one..I’ve red tons of such things and it used to piss me off,but not anymore..they are kids.
That’s why I’ve decided to become a Shoeligan!

  29. James says:

    @ Sarita

    Yes..let’s!

  30. kimmie says:

@James You know a group of us have already formed a fan club for MJ because of how eloquent her responses are here and at other forums. She always brings reason and clarity to the debate.

@Natasha, I too see SHoE as my safe haven and view my fellow SHoEligans as a group of fans that I can have an in-depth and sometime lively debate with about the show but we are still able to keep it from devolving into a bashfest or slinging of insults at each other. We come together because we love Smallville. SHoE is where sanity reigns supreme and I savor that.

You guys are so right that this Lois and Clark relationship that we are watching blossom and develop is so adult and mature and it couldn’t have been more evidenced than that rooftop scene. Those were two adults who were standing before one another and who were talking to each other openly and honestly and will continue to talk to one another. Despite them both knowing in their heart that this is the one, they still want to do it right and if that means things have to be talked out then that’s what they will do to make sure that each is comfortable, content and most importantly complete. They will talk with each other about their doubts, their fears, their hope, their dreams. It might take some time but that’s what happens in a real relationship.

My response would be to that one person who said they didn’t like the angst because it wasn’t iconic Clois is to believe that it would all be wine and roses and that Lois and Clark would not hit any bumps is being totally unrealistic.

I will be honest I am pleasantly surprised at how SV has handled and developed this relationship. I really thought they were going to rush things and muck it up somehow and in the process ruin the characters of Clark and Lois but you know what they haven’t. In fact SV has done something truly amazing. They have fleshed out and added so much depth and added layers to the relationship between these two and as Doug Trimble over at Superman Homepage said, even corrected the triangle for two so Clark doesn’t come off as a jerk and Lois doesn’t come off as stupid.

The writers and creators are taking their time and I for one appreciate the time, the care, the patience and the respect they are giving because this relationship deserves it. They are exploring all sides of this iconic relationship – not just the fun side, not just the competitive side, not just the heroic side, not just the romantic side but all sides. We are seeing why this couple has endured 70+ years. We are truly seeing why Lois is meant for Clark. Why Clark is meant for Lois. Bravo Kelly, Brian, all the writers and directors and a big bravo to Tom and Erica for doing such an outstanding job.

  31. James says:

@kimmie Exactly..I also thought they were kind of rushing things at the beggining of their relatioship and was “afraid” to invest myself in it as Steve once said, cause I expected they were going to muck it up somehow and pull the rug beneath our feet as it usually would be the case, but they haven’t..instead we got what you said,depth..layers, exploring all sides of the iconic relationship and in their own original SV way making it even better cause we’re all feeling it and as far as I’m concerned, this may well be the best version of triangle for two so far!
