SHoE: Episode 145 – “Escape”

We’re back after a LONG break and the first of a few wham-bam episodes you’ll get in a row from the SHoE crew. First up is ‘Escape’ where Steve walks you through the in’s and out’s, tells you what’s been going on with SHoE, introduces a new weekly segment we’re bringing into the show, and gives us insight to one very awkward conversation.

  2. Stan says:

^ I think Derek had the flu, hence the delay.

  3. MJ says:

I hope Derek is feeling better. I’ll look forward to listening to this later on. I’m sure Steve did a great job although I admit I would have paid good money to hear Steve and Derek try to navigate the awkwardness of Clark Kent’s sex life. LOL Either way, I”ll be sure to check it out.

  4. Scott M. says:

As a thank you to Steve and Derek for all of the time they spend entertaining us I donated $20 to Autism Speaks to help Kim reach her goal. I hope everyone else will say thank you by donating something as well.

  5. Sarita says:

THANK YOU! Gonna go listen right now!

  6. Sandra says:

    Hi Steve,

Really quick I just wanted to let you know that currently we actually can’t comment on the Autism awareness post. The comments are closed for the post. That’s why there is only 1 comment. I actually tried to comment on it last week and found that I couldn’t. Autism is an issue that is very close to my heart. I have a close family member who has autism and Autism Speaks is an organization that my husband and I are HUGE supporters of. I really appreciate it that you guys are taking the time to spotlight this incredible cause on your website. I have every intention of donating to it. So please don’t feel as though we were ignoring that particular post. We just weren’t alble to comment on it.

Steve, I really loved the podcast. I’m looking forward to hearing Derek back with you again but you did a great job today.

I really love your optimism about the show. I completely agree with you that the missteps this season have been small compared to previous seasons. I also agree that the episodes with mistakes this season are STILL better than most of the episodes in previous seasons. I also think that this has been a fantasic season. Even the things that get me riled up aren’t bad things. They are interesting things. I’m glad that I care enough about what is going on to talk and debate about the show. So totally agree with you there.

Was happy to hear your thoughts on Persusion and Conspiracy. I totally agree with you that this show NEEDS light hearted moments as much as possible in order to stay true to who Superman really is. It’s one of the things I enjoy most about Lois: she makes Clark happy. As a long time fan of this show, I really really like seeing Clark happy. I feel like we’ve watched him suffer for so many years and I love that when Lois is around him he is allowed to smile and enjoy his life. Then we turn around in Conspiracy and we see Lois being more serious and saving Zod’s life etc. I think it’s really cool that that character can be funny and light one minute and be kick ass and serious in the next. It’s why I love her so much.

I think you hit the nail on the head about the honesty and realism in some of these relationships. There were two relationship moments in Escape that really hit me as being “honest.”

The first was the one that you talked about: the conversation about scars. You are so right that that is something that many of us can relate to. I’m happily married now and so I’m obviously over the men who hurt me before. But every once and a while I might still remember something that hurt me years ago and it stings. You are so right about that.

The other moment that struck me as extremely honest and real was the moment when Clark and Lois were going to get into bed for the first time. Many times on TV, sex is treated like it’s just no big deal and there’s this assumption out there that everyone in their 20’s is just find and dandy with casual sex. Except….that’s not true. For many young 20 somethings, sex IS a huge deal particularly if you love someone. I found the nervousness of that scene between Clark and Lois to not only be very honest but very realistic when you consider that these are two people who have been friends for a long time, really love each other and are thinking that they might have finally found “the one.” It’s totally nerve wracking to spend the night with that person for the first time—even if it just involves sleeping next to them. So I give a kudos to the show for recognizing and remembering that for someone like Clark Kent, sex for the first time with the woman that he loves (with his powers intact) would absolutely be a big deal and it would be completely in character for him to be nervous. Very refreshing and very real.

I agree with you about the nostalgia with the episode. I think if anything was “off” it was that it was weird to see the characters in a new location, outside of Smallville and it was hard to juxtapose that with Zod and Tess talking about more dramatic things back in Smallville. It was like two different stories. But I agree with yo uthat there were at ton of things that worked. It was a fun episode and it was a chance to see where these characters are relationship wise.

Great podcast. Glad to have you back. Looking forward to hearing you back with Derek next week.

Holy hell Steve what were u thinking when u did this!
JK, I thought it was hallarious!!!!!
    (so did my brother)

@Steve, Great podcast, but I cut it off before you got on your soapbox because it’s not our fault that the commenting option was disabled. I left a comment offering to auction off a drawing, but it’s still in the moderators que. Fortunately Kim saw it and thanked me through Twitter.

Other than that, I agreed with your assessment of the episode. What made the episode rewatchable was the character stuff and not the actual plot. In that aspect, Escape was a success.

  10. chantingowl says:

the Jor-El sex talk was funner then the one I got when I was younger.

  11. Woo says:

Loved this episode, albeit a short episode still really well done. Loved the Kal-El, Jor-El sex talk, there were a few moments there while I was listening to my Apple iPod Classic and I busted out laughing at the sex talk at Subway. Steve brings up a great point, it was great seeing Chloe and Clark teaming up and working as a team. BTW, loved the Prof. Bailey comic book lesson (I can’t remember the correct name exactly) I hope we get that for Amanda Waller and Metallo for the respective episodes. Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad users and or Microsoft Zune/Zune HD SHoEligans: Sterek returns! Yes!

  12. REDK39 says:

  13. Gabe says:

Awesome podcast!! I haven’t laughed this hard at a podcast since the first time I hear the Lex Diaries. Amazing bit I must say. Also, I just donated 20 bucks and you Steve inspired me to do so, so thank you very much. Can’t wait to hear you and Derek back, it’s too bad we didn’t get the two overweight sidekicks though, maybe it can be on the DVD as a Chloe Chronicles kind of thing except it’s the Corben Chronicles.

  14. Steve says:

Sorry guys, didn’t realize that the comments were disabled on the Autism Speaks post.

  15. Natasha says:

It’s ok Steve, we still love you.

  16. Tim says:

YAY! I requested the Jor-El talk and Steve delivered! Yay Steve!

  17. Mike says:

I have to be kind’ve honest here, I really didn’t find the Prof. Bailey segment very welcome. It was sort of annoying having constant looping background music and it was much longer than needed. The dry humor reading of “The Silver Banshee” was kindve funny the first few times but was overdone. Apparently “Prof. Bailey” is a big name in the podcasting world, but this segment was nothing to write home about. I’m all for experimenting with the format of the show but I gotta say I wasn’t a fan. Sorry.

  18. Superville8 says:

The JOR-EL talk was hilarious really outdid yourself funny =D I also really enjoyed the new segment Prof.Bailey because I know a lot of fans come across something in an ep and they have no idea it actually means something. Like I bet at least half of the viewing audience did not catch the Vale reference in Upgrade well that is what you have Professor Bailey for to help people figure that out. Good Work can’t wait for the return of Sterek :)

  19. Sarita says:

great episode steve. almopst crapped my pants from laughing so hard w/ the whole “ice fortress walking into a convenience store” bit.

can’t wait for the checkmate episode! take it easy.

  20. cassi says:
