Red Queen: It didn’t really click to me that it could ACTUALLY be Martha until seeing you’re comments so, props to you guys. But before I read anything on who it might be, I immediatly thought it was Lana, anyone else? P.s. That was just my first thought, that does NOT mean however that I am looking foreward to another return of Lana.

I try not to say “eww” to anything on this show until I see it for myself. Martha is one of my favorite characters to EVER appear on Smallville and I think it’s going to be pretty difficult for me to dislike her when she returns.

It might actually be interesting to see how Clark responds to the idea that his mother is dating again. I imagine that might stir up some deep seated feelings of grief that Clark is still trying to deal with over losing Jonathan. I can see him wanting his mother to be happy but still hurting over the idea of his mother with a man who isn’t his father.

Either way, I’m sure that Martha and Perry’s return to Smallville is going to be connected with the larger plot for the season. I’m sure their romance isn’t going to take away from the insight and intrigue that they can bring to the Checkmate storyline and the Kandorians.

The only thing I will say is that if Martha can date Perry then I don’t ever want to hear Kelly or Brian say again that Lois can’t know Clark’s identity because of the “mythos.” At this point, Brian and Kelly are clearly picking and choosing with the mythos. So they need to tell a story that makes sense and not keep using that as an excuse.

I’m pretty sure that the Checkmate thing and Martha and Perry are all connected.

And even if she was being “lovey-dovey” with Perry, which no!, Martha’s a pretty smart woman, I think she could possibly do both at the same time. I’ve heard that women can do things like have relationships and work at the same time. Novel idea, that.

Good point. I just assumed since J’onn wiped Waller’s memories of the JLA’s faces and then in the next Checkmate scene, a Red Queen was left on her chessboard, that there was a connection. Plus, J’onn indicated to Clark in the loft scene that he was working for someone, which came right before the Red Queen scene (I believe). I could be overextrapolating, but it just made sense that there was a connection.

‘DOH! I didn’t even think of the connection with J’onn! However, are we SURE there’s a connection between the Red Queen (chess piece) and J’onn? There is no question that he has a hidden agenda, as he pointed out in the loft scene with Clark. But couldn’t those two things be separate? I guess it would be too much of an entanglement.
So, let’s hope the Red Queen IS our favorite red head, Senator Martha Kent. :)

@ Gabby, You make a good argument for Tess, but remember that there is a connection between who J’onn is working for, and who the Red Queen is. J’onn wouldn’t work for Tess, and who has more at stake for protecting Clark than his own mother, who is a U.S. Senator and it is very reasonable that she has made powerful connections these last three years she’s been in Washington. I know some people keep yelling out “Sam Lane!” but in the comics, the General hates aliens as much as Lex. So he wouldn’t have any reason to protect “intergallactic travellers”, but rather he would do what he could to fight against them just as Waller does. It would make more sense if the General was a part of Checkmate than going against it. So, my money is on Senator Martha Kent.

Excellent recap! You managed to get all the good bits in there, and now I can’t wait for this Friday’s episode. I was hoping to re-watch “Checkmate” to get ready for it, but you just saved me 45 minutes. :)

I honestly had no idea upon first viewing who the Red Queen would be. But after checking around a little, and after what you guys said, Martha is definitely a possibility.

However, couldn’t it be Tess? I know she looked kinda (read: a lot) distraught in her final scene there with Oliver, but I believe she’s a tricky one with things to hide (see: all the people/organisations she was juggling secretly before “Checkmate”). She’s a woman (Queen) and a red Head (Red). Maybe she wants to go against Waller for revenge?

Although, in my heart of hearts, I really hope it’s Martha.

You know I never thought of it being Martha…but it would make a lot of sense. I mean first off, she has red hair, so she’s got the literal meaning for Red Queen. Also she has made mention of it in the past, how she was raised in the Corporate World, how she had a thing for Lionel, how it is very possible that she has become a pretty powerful senator over the years…

That would be kinda Badass.
