“Persuasion” Airs Tonight!

LOIS MOVES IN WITH CLARK — It’s Valentine’s Day and while Clark is out on a date with Lois, he unknowingly becomes infected by gemstone kryptonite, which has magical wish-fulfilling properties. Clark mentions to Lois that he wishes they had a more traditional relationship, so Lois quits the Daily Planet, moves in with Clark and starts planning their wedding. Still unaware of his new power, Clark also casually tells Chloe he wishes she would spend more time watching out for him, so an infected Chloe takes his wish to heart and sets her sights on a new target, Lois.

This is what I read, “Lois moves in with Clark, blah, blah blah. Clark gets infected, blah blah, Chloe goes after Lois, blah blah blah.”
“Check back later for episode 143 of SHoE with your host Steve Glosson”.
Hell yes, Steve Glosson!!! Now I’m sold.
I’m excited for this episode. I feel like it’s going to be the first Clark-centered episode we’ve had since we came back from the 2 month hiatus to which I want to say–AWESOME. I miss Clark being front and center. It looks like it will be a nice mix of comedy and romance with Lois to possible CRAZY drama with Chloe and Zod. My fave kind of episode! A little something for everyone!
My kinda review of Persuasion:
Looks like making Absolute Justice 2 hours made one episode get knocked into another…
This was really like 2 episodes fused into one. The 1st episode being about Clark’s Meteor Power and the 2nd being the Kandorian story. I really wish the two could have merged a little smoother.
Overall, I cant complain. While the Meteor Power storyline seemed silly, once it took a backseat, a REALLY GREAT Smallville episode emerged.
We learned that Alia killed Jor-El and Zod actually changed the future…or did he?
Alia had powers in the future…Perhaps she is brought back to life with powers?
Powers..Towers.
Clark destroyed the TOWERS WOOOO
That was an awesome ending scene. Would have cared for a more epic score than a rock beat but it didnt detract much.
They built that tower impossibly fast, only to have it destroyed.
Whose to say they wont do it again?
Death Star #2 anyone?
My Predictions:
Alia will be brought back to life but with her Powers.
The Towers did not completely fall…they will rise again.
Can the future be changed?
Smallville is getting DEEP!
First Half Hour: B-
Second Half Hour: A
I HATE BUBBLES!
WOw I thought honestly that would b a “stand alone” kinda boring ep or part two to crimson w/ a different twist but I really loved that episode and the fight w/ Tess and Chloe was cool . and the great episode!
sorry for the typos a little tired but still liked the EP.
Honestly, this was an episode that had both it good and bad moments. The usage of kryptonite was different and led to interesting situations involving the other characters but I doubt will be seeing it again anytime soon or ever again.
How each character that was affected by Clark was all unique in their own ways and didn’t make it repeatitive. How Hamilton (not sure if it’s spelled correctly) acted all at ease made me laugh a bit. Wouldn’t mind seeing him have more time in the show.
As for the whole story point in the episode concerning the Kandorians was something I liked. Having it being revealed that Alya was the one responsible for Jor-El’s death wasn’t that big of a surprise and even though she was killed off, it wouldn’t be surprising if she returned before season 9 is over.
Rating wise I’ll give the episode a 3 to 3.5 out of 5. Wasn’t my favorite of the season but had a good mixture of seriousness with humor. With the episodes to come, I believe that there won’t be many more like it for the rest of the season.
I am just mere minutes from just seeing “Persuasion” wrap-up on the CW and I’m like “Oh, My Lanta…” First of all, don’t necessarily judge an episode by a trailer because I thought it was going to be “Crimson Part II.” Not to say “Crimson” wasn’t an awesome episode because it was and so was this one.
First off, great acting by all the cast, the only person missing really was Hartley (you really didn’t need him in this story).
Great work by Allison Mack and Miss Durance in their scene together, I don’t think we ever seen them verbally attack each other and Miss Mack did a great job playing mean protective “Watchtower” Chloe which we all have seen bubbling under the surface since “Savior” this Chloe with Conviction in her role as (Steve you will appreciate this I hope.) by being the J.J. Dillon of The JLA. As I was watching the scene with Chloe and Lois in the farm-house I said to myself “ouch mean Chloe.”
Erica Durance did an awesome job with her range of emotions when she was under (I’m assuming a mixture of Red, Green, and Sliver K in that dust) from being Mrs. Clever in her dinner scene with Kal-El, being wounded and really emotionally distraught after Chloe was cold blooded to her, from her crying scene in the loft with Kal-El and her funny scene in the wedding dress (which she looked amazing in, BTW.) Geek Wood: Loved Lois’ conversations on the cordless with Martha, Lucy, (or at least are we to assume they have reconnect via Facebook and made up?) and The General… Her dance in the wedding dress in the hallway…LOL.
Callum Blue. Finest performance as Major Zod (thus far). The on-screen chemistry between he and Tom rivals the chemistry of Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling in seasons 5-7. Every time they were together on screen tonight nothing but excitement and emotional drama in its’ purest form. The look on his face when he guns down Alia… My god, a mixture of anger, disgust, and fulfillment. Great acting. I love the look on his face when he sees the towers burn down pure briallance.
Also, great work by Cassidy Freeman and Phill I, as well despise The Bubbles… great scene in the washroom between her and Callum. Great job, with the fight scene between Tess and Chloe maybe even better than her fight with Lana in “Bulletproof.” I don’t know, all I know is I enjoyed it.
Geek Wood Moment For Me: We finally find out who the woman in the blonde pony-tail is. “Faora.” “My Lanta…” So we saw in “Disciple” at the end of that episode there is bond, between her and Zod whether we see them together as a couple is still up in there.
They set up so many things in this episode that will hopefully play out the rest of Season Nine.
If Alia is truly gone, what does that do for the future we saw in “Pandora…?”
Where will Kal-El and Major Zod end up especially after what happened at the end of this episode with Kal-El burning RAO Towers down?
What will happen with Chloe, Lois, and Tess after this episode especially Tess? After this episode I agree with Derek, I doubt she will make it out of 9-22 alive.
Episode Rating: Strong 4 out of 5.
Apple iPod/Apple iPhone and Microsoft Zune/Zune HD SHoEligans can’t wait to hear what the SHoE Brain Trust thinks of this episode.
Side Note: Do you think Ollie sent Chloe those Red Roses we see in The WatchTower?
There were lots in this episode I loved. I thought Erica did a great job with the whole range of emotions she had to go through but my favourite scene was her Wedding Dress dance. She looked like she was having so much fun as she did it and she looked stunning.
I thought Cassidy was awesome but frankly she steals most of the scenes she’s in and the interactions between Tess and Zod are always to be looked forward to. Loved the fight between her and Chloe and the offer of co-operation, something for the future? The scene with Tess and Clark though, fantastic. The fear on her face was just incredible, seriously I wanted to go through the screen and grab her to get her the heck away from him.
Bring me more Emil! I love Alessandro but his Emil is so great. And the relaxing was too funny!
Loved Chloe. Gotta love a girl who is always prepared for the unexpected. Green Kryptonite, check…
What didn’t I like about this episode, I hate to say it and ya’ll are gonna jump on me so hard, but Clark. Oh Clark. I liked his stuff with Lois, especially the dinner table scene. The fact Shelby couldn’t eat Lois’s cooking was great fun. In general I didn’t have a major issue with him except for his scene with Chloe (when she first becomes hypnotised) where what she says just seems to go right over his head. The way he speaks to her made me want to spank him.
I would have liked to have seen a Chloe/Lois scene at the end where they make up and an apology from Clark to Chloe.
And yes I do think the flowers were from Ollie.
Overall maybe a B-/B for me. Not my favourite episode of the season, heck after Absolute Justice its a hard job. It has left a few intriguing questions for us in relation to the towers and now has Zod changed the future by killing Alya?
Now I’m just awaiting on my SHoE episode. Is it here yet?
An apology from Clark to Chloe? *is speechless* Chloe is LONG overdue for an apology to Clark (and I mean a sincere one, not the condescending ones she did and did not give for, oh I don’t know, bugging his house, his phone, asking him to kill, etc.) But since that’s never going to happen, I’ll get on with it.
I actually thought Clark was pretty kickass with everyone. His plans for the Kandorians is finally realized in this episode when he gives Alia and Faora new identities and a chance at a normal life. Is it going to work, probably not, but he wouldn’t be the future Superman if he didn’t try. His facial expressions in his scenes with Lois ranged from hilarious to heartbreaking and how glad am I that Lois actually remembered what happened this time so that there is an actual lesson learned from everything. Clark and Zod was so intense, but Clark’s scene with Tess had me with my hand over my mouth the entire time. I knew he wouldn’t hurt her, but I was actually in a little fear for her life. But the absolute best was Clark destroying the towers. Once again, I gasped because I completely did not see that coming. Tom did a great job with his performance in this episode.
And yes, Lois’ wedding dress dance did not stop being funny even if I saw the webclip a few times.
Was it just me, or did the crest on Alia’s forehead at her funeral look like the SHoE logo?
I thought this was a great episode. First off, I wanted to jump up and down for joy that we finally got an episode in this back half of the season where CLARK KENT was the focus!!! YES!!!!
To me, this kind of episode is the best kind of Smallville episode because it has a little bit of everything. It had action, drama, real sadness, humor, romance, love, fight scenes….everything. Personally, I thought that the episode needed the first half hour in order for anything in the second hour to really matter. In a good drama, you need to be able to raise the stakes. If you go into an episode guns blazing right away with the highest amount of drama there is no where to go. It always shocks me how some people can’t realize that.
This episode showed so many different sides to Clark and what he’s going through right now. Erica Durance knocked it out of the park AGAIN this week. Clark’s scenes with her at the dinner table were hilarious. (How funny was it when he tried to feed her pot roast to Shelby and even the dog wouldn’t eat it? lol) He told Lois he wanted a more traditional relationship only to realize that he missed the old Lois. I liked the way he assured her when she was crying that he did see them always being together. Even when she was under the spell, it seemed clear that he knows that he wants to stay with Lois. Was I the only one that noticed that Clark looked a little broken up in his last scene with Lois when he was holding her? She had just asked him if he had a huge secret if he would tell her. He assured her that he trusts her….and when they panned around to his face….he looked sad. I feel like it must be killing him that he hasn’t told her yet about being the Blur. He clearly trusts Lois so I think it has more to do with trying to protect her and keep her away from that dangerous side of his life. But you could see in his face in that moment that it’s hurting him to keep it from her. And yes, Lois in the wedding dress was hilarious. And God, could she get any more beautiful???
His scenes with Chloe were interesting and I agree with Natasha. If anyone owes anyone it’s an apology it’s Chloe oweing Clark one. I’ve been waiting for her to genuinly apologize to him all damn season for the things she’s done. Now, that’s not to say taht I don’t find her darker arc interesting and great drama because I do. But I don’t blame Clark for being a bit cold to her. Chloe has given Clark no reason to trust her nor has she shown him any warmth. I think his reactions to her are appropriate for the way she’s been acting all season. And now she’s telling him to send the Kandorians to the Phantom Zone??? Where was that sentiment last year when Clark tried to send Davis there and Chloe interfered and stopped him? (Is she ever going to apologize for that??) So, Natasha, I totally agree with you there.
Chloe’s words to Lois chilled me. I know Chloe was under a spell but there are obvioisly some deeper resentent issues there. She played on every one of Lois’ insecurities and it was painful to watch. She’s trying to turn Lois into Lana without even giving Lois a chance to prove that she’s different. Sometimes I feel like Chloe doesn’t want Clark to be happy. Chloe’s alone. Clark never returned her love and the one man who truly loved Chloe, Jimmy, was murdered. I feel like she doesn’t want Clark to find love and truly find balance and be happy. It seems that Chloe is cutting off her emotions and she wants everyone else to be as lonely and unhappy as she is. Does this mean I do’nt like Chloe? On the contrary, I think this is a very interesting arc for her and I’m interested to see how this character is going to handle the rest of the season. Will she find redemption? Will she ever truly accept Clark’s new happiness with Lois? It’s very interesting.
I loved the moment with Clark and Zod where Zod told Clark that he tortured his father. Clark grabbed him and said, “Do you think that I don’t want vengeance?” or something like that. It was a great moment. I was honestly scared for Tess when Clark went after her. Clark was so enraged. I don’t really know what to think about Alia. On the one hand, I thought the funeral was really well shot and very interesting and emotional. I liked Clark telling Zod that it wasn’t “his kind of justice” when Zod killed her. And then when he burned down the towers??? WOW. That was really badass. It was almost like Clark drew a line in the sand and told Zod that he was against him.
Are we supposed to think that Faora is good or bad? She seemed sympathetic in that first scene with Clark but I guess we are to assume that she sold him out to Zod? Are we to assume also that Zod legitmately loved Jor-El? He seemed angry and hurt himeslf when Alia admitted she killed him. Very very interesting.
Really great episode in a great season. Outside of Absolute Justice, this was my favorite episode thus far of the 2nd half of the season.
it was pretty good but how did Chloe know to use green k to get rid of the effects. i was bummed when Alia died i wanted to see more of her but idk why i was getting my hopes up its sv.
I liked the episode. In a weird way, I think it has a lot of controversey in it. I could see it being a controversial episode–BUT I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. It’s an episode that makes you think.
Clark was in clearly in pain in the end when he made the choice to burn the towers down. The camera panned close to his face and Tom did a good job. It almost looked like he was going to cry. He didn’t want to do it. He did it because he had no other choice. He had tried every other option to get through to Zod. I feel like Clark’s decision is going to be controversial but I understood why he did it. It was powerful.
I’m also fully convinced at this point that Clark is fully and completely in love with Lois. Why is he keeping her in the dark? It’s clearly killing him to lie to her. Why Clark? Why?
Rich, I don’t have any proof, but when Clark is on Red K, such as crimson, green K took away those effects when they were in his bloodstream. So maybe when he inhaled gemstone K, it got in his system and the green K negated it.
MJ, I swear if Chloe ever acknowledged that she played the largest role in the debacle with Davis (and Jimmy’s death), then I would forgive her everything that has happened from the second half of S8 on through to S9. I admit I wanted to punch something when she suggested the Phantom Zone. HELLO!!! Jimmy would still be alive if everyone last season had just gone along with Clark’s plan from the beginning, and this is why I’m on board for Clark’s plans for the Kandorians this season.
Clark with Tess and then him blowing up the towers were easily as shocking for me as the bloody!Clark corpse in “Beast” last season. Whether or not Clark’s actions are going to be controversial remains to be seen, but I also can’t see how they weren’t necessary. He had to do something proactive that didn’t involve any type of casualties. It was practically diplomatic of him to torch the towers considering the future he saw in Lois’ head. (I think the more I talk about this episode, the more I like it.) I love Clark-centric episodes.
I absolutely loved it! It was so great to have a Clark-centric episode, and it ran the gamut from humour to drama to romance to suspense… I thought everyone brought their A-game. It was well written, acted and directed, just completely solid all around. I wasn’t expecting nearly as much plot development as we got, either. And while I loved pretty much every scene, I can’t not give a shout-out to Alia’s funeral. One of the most beautiful things the show has ever done, IMO, and Louis Febre’s score was incredible. And the end! WOW. What a wonderful reminder of just how powerful Clark really is. I was blown away.
iam kinda glad Clark is growing up only took him 9 years to grow up. i have a feeling Zod will fizzle out like Davis did last season. why did they kill Alia she was interesting i was more interested in her story then Zods i should have known sv would do something stupid like this. to be honest if sv dose not get renewd it won”t matter to me if it dose great if not no biggie.
Natasha, I completely agree with you. I would forgive Chloe in a second if I felt she had any sense of remorse for her actions. I absolutely believe that Chloe is a good person and that everything she does comes from her belief that she’s doing the right thing. The problem I have with her right now is that I am fully convinced that she really DOES think that the end justify the means. She doesn’t think she has anything to apologize for. And that makes my blood boil. haha. But yes, I would forgive her in a second if I saw a genuine moment where she acknowledged her mistakes and admitted that she had played a part in the Davis debacle last season. And I’m sure that Clark would forgive her as well.
I also agree with you that Clark’s actions with the tower were necessary. I don’t think he had any other choice. I thought Tom did a great job with that scene.
The episode seems to have received mixed reactions again in the fandom. Maybe because it was a little “different”. I really liked the jarring contrast from light and humerous to dark drama. Having Lois in the wedding dress and then cutting to the darkness with Zod made it particularly dramatic and shocking. The more I think about the episode the more I appreciate it. Smallville took a risk and I think it worked.
All in all, this is the first season of Smallville where I have felt that every episode was solid. There have been some that were better than others for sure but there has not been one episode this season that I’ve felt was truly bad. And that’s huge for this show. They deserve a SEason 10.
MJ, once again we agree. I think every episode this season has been rewatchable. Some episodes weren’t “great” but I didn’t hate them the way I hated, say “Power” or “Promise” (or “Thirst”, the greatest episode ever). But the episodes that have been amazing far exceed the ones that were just good. Definitely one of the most solid seasons.
Persuasion surprised me because I was just expecting some light-hearted fun, which I got, but was pleasantly surprised to get more of the season arc with Zod. The shift between the two plots was a bit jarring, but ACS managed to merge them together when she had Clark mind-whammy himself. She’s produced two solid episodes now (because Idol was one of the best of the series) so I hope she sticks around for season 10 *crosses fingers*
Natasha, I agree again. :) haha. I think “Idol” was one of the most amazing character driven episoes of the series. It was a classic Superman story and it’s ironic because the episode only featured 3 of the series regulars: Clark, Lois and Chloe and yet they more than carried the load together in that episode.
Upon rewatching this week’s episode again, I realized that there was some really brilliant symbolism going on. Those that have written this episode off because it was so “different” and contained so much humor are not, in my opinion, looking deep enough.
The entire episode was almost a blatent symbol of Clark’s two personas as both man and alien. The scenes at the farm with Lois as the “traditional” wife were warm, and emotional and talked about the idea of family, love and being together “always.” Clark revealed in the loft scene that he sees them staying together. Clark and Lois’ final scene at the farmhouse was very domestic in nature in that she was eating breakfast at the table and the atmosphere between them was comfortable. He was gentle and loving with her. He held her. You could see a glimpse of the marriage that they are going to have one day and in my opinion, it’s believable. I can believe that these two will be husband and wife. This entire scenerio at the farm represented Clark’s humanity and the part of him that desires love and family and human attachments.
Then you juxtapose all of that with the jarring darkness in the scenes with Zod. The Kandorians represent Clark’s alien heritage and there is clearly a distinct cultural clash going on for Clark here. On the one hand, Clark was reverant at Alia’s funeral. You could tell that he respected the ritual and felt the pain of the people. On the other hand, he clearly rejects the Kryptonian view of justice. Zod outlined this very clearly when he told Clark that “in the coming days you will learn that there is only one kind of justice and that you have to decide whether or not you are one of us.” And that’s a question for Clark this entire season. Is he man or is he alien? OR—is he both? (We the audience know that he is both and that only in striking this balance will he finally be able to rise as Superman.)
The episode itself was a fascinating view at the dicotomy that is Clark Kent. He is mild mannered farmboy and he’s also an extremely strong, alpha male. If you compare those finals scenes in the last act. First you see Clark embracing Lois in a warm hug and smiling at her, reassuring her. Then we have him standing atop the building in the last scene with complete resolve doing what needed to be done to bring down those towers. Clark was not a terrorist in that scene. The tower was the terrorists WEAPON. He was destroying the source of their power and destroying their weapon. It had to be done. He looked like a freaking rock star standing up there. But it’s a pretty brilliant reminder of the two sides to this character. He is extremely complex. Much more complex than most people would give him credit for.
I could see a lot of this being overlooked but honestly….I think the symbolism was clearly there. And once I took the time to look for it I realized it was pretty amazing.
MJ, I think I love you. What you said about the symbolism and the dichotomy between Clark’s humanity and his alien heritage is very thought provoking and now I want to watch this episode for the fourth time. I think the most powerful part if the episode is everything from the moment Clark grabs Zod and expresses how he sometimes wishes he could be a killer. It’s hearing Clark says things like this that make me love him even more than I already do. This is one of he things I meant about the episode being controversial because I think Clark’s harshest critics are those hat don’t truly understand him. Many people see Clark as this Boy Scout that doesn’t do or think anything outside of morally right. What they fail to understand is he constant inner struggle he has to go through to do the right thing. It would be so easy for him to just kill Lex or Metallo or right now Zod, but he doesn’t. He has all this power, as shown in the scenes with Tess and destroying he towers, but there are certain lines he just can’t cross because he IS this symbol of hope for the world. We’ve seen Clark struggle with this as early as Rogue in Season 1, but he is more than just a powerful alien; he is Jonathan and Martha’s son. He doesn’t have a shred of human DNA, but it’s reasons like his that he’s the most human of us all (if we take the definition of what it means to be humane). So yes, I love that he blew up those towers because not only was that a kickass sequence, but it was a reminder of the power that Clark has to keep in check every single day.
Natasha, we are on the same page. I COMPLETELY agree with you that some people just don’t understand Clark or Superman for that matter. They write him off as a Boy Scout and don’t realize the incredible power that he wields on a regular basis and how much strength it takes to control that power and do the right thing all the time. That is what makes him so special. I defended his actions with Zod in “Disciple” when he warned him away from Lois for the same reason. Clark gets angry. He feels anger and rage and fear just like the rest of us. The difference is that he chooses to rise above it and do what’s right. He is physically the strongest man in the world but he also embodies incredible internal strength. What makes Superman a hero isn’t his powers—it’s his capacity for compassion, love and hope in the face of darkness and despair–the ability to rise above.
It’s been great chatting with you. I hope Steve talks about some of this stuff on the podcast. I’d love to hear his take on it.
Its sad but I finally watched the episode…a week late which is weird for me. But I really enjoyed it and its the first episode in a while that felt new and old at the same time. Chloe protecting Clark is something I really miss and loved seeing her as her old fiery self. Lois as an old fashioned wife…too funny. I wasnt sure about the gemstone kryptodust but they made it work. Also it seemed like we got more heat vision ever in one episode. Using it on the tower was too awesome. Obviously the Zod and Kal-El scenes were great.I just hope they dont backtrack…
Finally got time to watch Persuasion! Loved it for one single reason: Lois little dance! I must have watched that scene a million times. It’s soo awesome. :D I love Erica!
