UPDATED: Johns Plans 2 Part JSA Story
We’ve been talking about it for months now, and minutes ago IGN TV confirmed the two remaining members of the Justice Society of America that will come to Smallville in the Season 9 episode, “Society”. For spoilers sake, the announcement is after the break, but needless to say, we called this one folks.
That’s right folks. As we predicted last week, Hawkman and Doctor Fate will join the previously announced Stargirl in episode 12 of season nine. IGN was also lucky enough to find out just who exactly would be playing these two characters, and I think the casting is spot on. Hawkman will be played by Michael Shanks of Stargate SG-1 fame, while Doctor Fate will be played by Brent Stait whose past work includes an on-going role in the TV series, Andromeda.
This announcement has made me a firm believer that this episode has the potential to be one of the biggest things the show has ever done. Hawkman and Doctor Fate are huge forces in the DC Universe, and the chance to see these characters come to life has me quite excited for this episode. I think the casting of Shanks and Stait is perfect due to the fact that these men have already established themselves as legends in the Sci-Fi community, and now they get to show off to the Superhero community.
UPDATED: Fancast.com is now reporting that Aliens in America star Britt Irvin will be playing Stargirl. I personally haven’t seen any of Britt’s work, but since Stargirl is Johns’ creation, I trust that he made good judgment in the casting of Irvin.
UPDATED (10-23-09): Johns announced last night via Twitter that “Society” is actually the first part of a two part story. The second part “Legends” will be directed by Tom Welling and written by Johns. Geoff stated that Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson wanted to make the JSA a massive deal and to do Stargirl, Hawkman, and Doctor Fate right, so they made the episode a two part episode. It seems that “Society” and “Legends” might arguably be the biggest and most ambitious episodes in Smallville history.
How do you think Irvin, Shank, and Stait will do playing some of the JSA’s best and brightest? Sound off in the comments below!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome!
Hey, Erica Durance was in an Episode of Stargate SG-1 with Michael Swanks, 8×07 Affinity. But other than that, haha, I think that the casting is great! :D So excited for this episode!
I’m sorry to say this, but as exciting as this is, I’m still missing wildcat…
But I’m still PUMPED!
Wow, as a huge fan of the Stargate franchise I am really excited for the casting of Hawkman. And as a fan I can also tell you that it’s “Michael Shanks” not Swanks, just thought I’d let you know. Keep up the great work guys.
Thanks Jacob. Should be fixed now.
It just hit me… this could be the worst episode of the series if it’s not done right. I have faith though.
I’m not stunned by the decision of Stargirl or Hawkman. But I’m with Gary I was stunned that WildCat didn’t get the nod. Well, I’m not going to complain too much. It’s Geoff Johns… I was not disappointed or skeptical when “Legion” was announced and now that I have actually seen this cast. I’m quite pumped for what will go down as far as The Justice Society is concerned. I’m hoping for some interaction between Stargirl and Chloe. I wonder how those two characters will interact. I really hope Justin Hartley will be in this episode because he missed out on “Legion”. I will be disappointed if Chloe, Lois, Emil, or Ollie are not all in this episode because we all know Kal-El is going to be in all of this episode. Actually come to think Lois is not so much needed in this episode. But Chloe, Emil, and Ollie for sure.
Like Legion, I don’t think Lois is going to be in this episodes. This is one episode, I am hoping to look forward to.
OMG MICHAEL SHANKS!! YESS! I’M A HUGE SG-1 FAN!!!
The only way this could been more awesome was if Stargirl was played by Amanda Tapping!
Not a Michael Shanks fan – but I’m still excited. Maybe this role will change my mind.
I guess that they only had enough money for three members of the Society – oh well!
So far this Season has yet to disappoint me so we shall see how things unfold.
wait, the chick that did the voice for X-23 is stargirl? and how are they going to pull off not having her robot sidekick?
Stargirl hasn’t had the robot sidekick for nearly five years now so I don’t think it will be much a problem not having it around.
Plus she is a teenager so having Amanda Tapping play her would have been a stretch…
As for not having Wildcat… I would have liked to see him but I think they already had a magic user (in case Clark needs to be weakend), a bruiser (Hawkman could hit him when he’s down), so they needed a talker. Plus a female representative of the team. She’s being groomed to lead the team so it makes sense on a marketing stand point as well. People watch the show and pick up the JSA book. She is one of the headliners…
No idea how this will play out at all but this is gonna be an epic episode
Update the news page!!! Smallville’s episode called Society coming up later this season….only one of two parts! An episode called Legends will be following it up! Reported by Kryptonsite — Season 9…..rocks!
Yes, and The Welling is directing “Legends”!
Michael Shanks is PERFECT for HAWKMAN! this is going to be Legendary Television.
That just goes to show you how much faith they have in Tom Welling and his directing skills. Each time he gets an episode its not a filler episode at all.
Can’t wait for all this to air.
sounds fantastic! Can’t wait to see “Society” and “Legends”!!!! I love 2 parters! Tom’s episodes are soooo great!!!
Awesome, awesome stuff! :-) Big guns, I’m soo damn happy! And even more happy that the CW is showing up Warner and taking chances – I only wish that Jay Garrick could have joined the cast, too; it would have been cool to try and work in a little something to explain why Bart chose that name as one of his aliases. :-)
Im Not Sure if You Guys knew This but Martian Manhunter is returning
Smallville’s upcoming Justice Society-themed two-parter has added another headliner. Exec producer Kelly Souders confirms that the highly anticipated eppys (titled “Society” and “Legends”, which are slated to air in early 2010) will mark the return of Phil Morris as Martian Manhunter.
