February 24, 2009 (Burbank, California) ─ The CW announced today the early pickups of six series, including five of the network’s signature dramas and the reality hit AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL, which will all return in Fall 2009.

Among the series receiving early pickups for next season are The CW’s Monday tandem of sophomore sensation GOSSIP GIRL and ONE TREE HILL, which combined to lift The CW to become the fall’s #1 network on Monday with women 18-34. Both GOSSIP GIRL and ONE TREE HILL have scored double-digit gains compared to their previous seasons. Freshman hit 90210 has improved the network’s Tuesday night by double-digit increases in key demos. Do we know if this is a go with Tom Welling as well…or some psuedo spin-off season?

I would have been fine if it ended this season…but I am still on board for more. Especially if they keep bringing in more DC Villians and Heroes. I am also ready for an entire season of Lois and Clark flirting. I am so ready for Erika to be back…though I did actually like the uber-tearjerking exit and end to the Clana. Now for a season of Clois!

I really REALLY hope they can get some of the old faces back at some point either later this season or next. They have to get Martha on at some point. And I really want to see Lex of course…and Kara…and more Justice League…and more Brainiac…more more more. And Lionel…who else am I missing?

  2. Nic says:

Sorry we won’t get Clois..We can’t even get a flying Clark..Yet they..the writers keep giving us all the Villains of Superman lore..Yet No Superman..not even close to becoming Superman..lol
Clark still pining for Syrupy Lana..And keep holding on to a failing relationship..And all the pie in the sky dreams..
He falls on his knees in the rafters.. in the barn professing that if he can’t have Lana basically his life is over..haaaaa
Next we have Clark tonguing Lois..doing some very hot and heavy spit swapping….Wait didn’t he just fall apart because of not being able to be with Lana?
    In an last epi..Go figure!!
All i can say is… what the heck are the writers and producers smoking?
Are they all high on weed or crack cocaine?
Even my gal Chole is doing stupid things that us not in her character..having watched her since season one..This is the best written character on the show..WTF!!
    Someone needs to wake up!!
Before i fear this great show is heading for a nose dive …
For the love of all things scared..
    Please Please writers and producers..
Make Chloe Lois..Let Clark Fly and bring on the Villains..And You will see..The shows ratings will indeed shoot through the roof top!!

  3. Woo says:

I have to say this has brighten my day. I had a pretty dull day but this has brought it up. Now with Season 9 coming next year, I can only Season 9 will be the last season of the series. I just hope it is as good as season eight has been. My worry though is that it will feel too much like a wrap up season. I realize most television series when it is the last season you do need to call things back from earlier seasons. But I hope they don’t do it too much. My hope for next season is more Kara and Martha. I wouldn’t mind hearing a voice over or a guest shot by John S.

  4. Craig says:

I was prepared for it to wrap up at this season’s end, but I’ll gladly watch another. At this point it’s just REALLY stupid for him not to fly and most importantly it needs to be officially established that it’s an alternate universe. It’s the only solution to the problems the writers have created and PLEASE no more slo-mo superpowers, it’s annoying.

    Where the ****is arctic breath?

On the one hand I love to watch it because it’s Superman, the best superhero ever. On the other it’s just utterly painful to see the legend get crapped on.

Can we at least have a glimpse of the suite? Sketches of it?

  5. Matt W says:

Well it was pretty obvious they werent ending the show this season, They started to set it up with Identity but I guess that was just another tease. I love Smallville and was loving it through season five and then things just have been brought to the show that make it like science fiction alternate Smallville. And while I love Green Arrow , the overuse of Braniac and the Doomsday thing, not keeping Kara in the show, Not ending Smallville in season seven while rosenbaum was still there just werent good moves. Maybe The CW pressured them to do another season, I know networks arent always concerned with quality and go by ratings

  6. Logan says:

Wow, that got negative fast. More Smallville is a good thing, this season has probably been the best since maybe season 3, and they did it without quite a few key players from the past. As for establishing that it’s an alternate universe…ummmmm…what? I think the fact that it’s set in present day COMPLETELY establishes that. Would you like them to introduce the “Infinite Earths”? Casual fans don’t need that, they could care less about the difference between the comics and the show. Like Al and Miles always said “That isn’t our problem.” And if the new producers want to stick with “no tights no flights” that’s fine with me. The writing has gotten better and better this season, we finally got Justin as a series reg, we’ve gotten a bit more Lois and Clark, (CHLOE ISN’T LOIS!!!!!!! Do you guys even watch the show? Or heck, even listen to SHoE? They (the show runners) have said it time and again, not happening, give it up!) and we got to see the Legion. Not to mention what’s coming up, which looks really promising.

If you people hating on the show don’t like it, then go watch something else, but stop complaining either way. Don’t gripe just to grip, eith make a well thought ou valid point, or just stop. B*tching and moaning makes you all look like children. This is the kind of thing that keeps me away from message boards/forums/et al.

Anyway, thanks for the good news Derek, I’m definitely excited to see where they go after this season.

  7. Scott says:

Logan thanks for writing exactly what I was thinking.

  8. Braedon says:

    sweat

  9. Nic says:

Sorry Logan but it is after all your opinion!
and we all are entitled to your own, as well even if it mean B*tching and complaining..lol

  10. Nic says:

It is a fact that Smallville”s ratings have nose dived…
Chole is the blue print for LOis..Since day one..fact!!
whether or not they the writers go through with that we won’t know until the final epi..Yes ..i said it..
How do you know what will happen..Stranger things have happened..Like SUperLana..Lionel’s death..shall i go on..
    Hello!
    It ain’t over yet..
FYI..I have watched since day one..How about you?
And we all know one epi means one thing and the other something else..
So NO Logan you have no idea..lol

  11. Craig says:

If I state my opinion then that’s that. You’re telling me that nothing on the show has EVER annoyed you? Trust me, I’m not one of the guys who’s all over the ‘net complaining, it’s dumb and a waste of time. I’m not saying it needs to be on the same level as the comics, but the writing is terrible at times.

  12. Scott says:

Hey Nic, I don’t know if anyone has ever told you about the incredible thing called the remote control, it allows you to switch channels so you can find something you want to watch. If you watch and bitch about the show then switch the channel so we don’t have to read your stupid pointless comments.

  13. Logan says:

No, there’s been plenty about the show I haven’t enjoyed, and we could go into a discussion about that and that would be fine with me. However, I don’t get on here and bitch and moan about getting more of a show that I’ve enjoyed IMMENSELY over the years, and complain that the writer’s aren’t gonna do it the way I want. You’re crucifying something that hasn’t even happened yet! And, yeah, you have a remote, change the channel if you don’t ike it, or just watch and shut up. This is why the fanboy community gets a bad rap.

And, you know, if you were bringing valid points with well thought out arguments, I’d be more or less okay with it. (A La Woo’s post, a well thought out statement about hopes and fears for what may be the last season)

And, yeah, some of it is my opinion, but Chloe being Chloe and not Lois is a FACT. You want to see that, go write you’re own fanfic, otherwise, shut up about it. Eight years in and you still don’t get it. Being a “blueprint” is not the same thing as “being the character.” FACT! (Lionel’s death was strange? Really? I’ve been waiting on that since the pilot? Who didn’t know that Lex would eventually kill him? SuperLana? Not really strange, more like a “Huh, that’s different…” So, yeah, do go on…)

And how about me? Let’s see, loooongtime comics reader, with plenty o’ Superman books, so when they announced Smallville, what the hell do you think I did, ignore the show? I’ve been watching since day one, I’ve got tons of VHS tapes of the episodes because I would tape them since there were no DVDs when they started. As soon as the DVDs began hitting shelves (including the Canadian release that came well before the season sets) I started picking them up. I love this show, yeah I’ve been watching since day one, and had the brains about me to realize that, yeah Chloe was the “Lois” of the story, but that eventually he would move away from Smallville and meet the actual Lois (Didn’t happen in that order though, lol, gotta love the smallville twist on the mythos). Then, hey, they introduced the actual Lois, proving that, yeah Chloe wasn’t Lois.

But, you’re right, we won’t know what happens until the final episode, and if they make Chloe Lois, well, I’ll be shocked, and say “good on ya” to the writers, until then I’m going to watch every week to see the journey and not use the internet to bash the show. The ratings have taken a nose dive? That’s TV across the boards pal, it has nothing to do with quality. Quality does not equal ratings. Any TV watcher will tell you that. However, the show getting picked up for another season means that either A. The CW thinks they really have something left to give, B. The show’s sponsors aren’t running away in droves, and are probably happy with their exposure on the show, C. The ratings are good enough that they’d love for the show to come back (which actually is just an amalgamation of options A&B), or D. They’re plate is so empty that they’re willing to bring back whatever good shows they have to try and keep the network aflot (which, hey, is a very likely option). And, out of curiosity, do you know what the ratings for this year have been? Do you even know how the ratings system works?

Doubt it. Smallville and Supernatural have shown SIGNIFICANT increases in key demographics this year, occasionally even beating its opponents in those demographics. Takes nothing but a simple Google search (and an understanding of the Nielsen system) to find that out.

I’m pretty sure I’ve got at least a few more ideas than you.

  14. Nic says:

The last time i checked we weren’t living in a communist camp!!
If i or someone else wants to express your opinions what ever they maybe .Who are you to tell us we can’t or that we should switch the channel with a remote control.
Many of us have watched since day one..have you?
We can and we will give an opinion because we disagree with the direction it is going in..I believe we can say what we want..We haven’t stopped you!!
Isn’t it funny you are expressing your own opinions and we actually don’t mind..Funny you can’t afford us the same courtesy..Wow!!
And actually you read my comment and responding to it.So it couldn’t possibly be that pointless..haaaa

  15. Nic says:

    haaaaa
Logan Please your ignorance is mindblowing!!
You don’t write for the show Smallville..That is a fact!!
    Here is an idea..
Smallville writers will do whatever they want regardless of what you think or i think you know..or anybody else..How about that?
Don’t get so angry because you are missing the boat!!
    The rating have dropped..fact!!
Chloe is Chloe..Still does stop fans form saying otherwise …Fact!!
Lois is Lois..You could have fooled me..what a brilliant response..lol
Yea like we all didn’t know this..
And still you don’t know what will happen in the end..So Actually you are full of crap!!
Who knows what will happen ..You certainly don’t know..Do you?
    Nope!!

    haaaaaaaaa

  16. Scott says:

Nic, it’s not that you can’t have your own opinion but a lot of us actually like the show and don’t need to hear you bash it every week. If people have problems with the show they say I wish they would have done this or maybe kept this out instead of saying the writers suck, acting isn’t that great, and man why is this show still on the air. I and others watch the show and we will not like certain aspects of what they are doing but at the same time the positive things far outway the negative ones. If for you the negative outways the positive just stop watching and I’m sure smallville will not know you stopped watching and neither will anybody else.

  17. Logan says:

Scott, you seem like a pretty bright guy with well thought out opinions, but I think it’s pretty obvious this guy is either an idiot or he’s screwing with us.

I am curious how I’m “missing the boat” though. I’m not sure he knows what that expression means. I love that he just writes FACT! after everything and thinks that somehow makes it true. For Pete’s sake, he basically restates exactly what I said as if somehow him wording it makes it okay. He says I’m ignorant, but never gives any instance of how I’m ignorant. Unless he means with the ratings thing. Which, he’s wrong, I’m positive that the show has had a pretty steady (albeit small) rise in ratings since the finale last year. Notice how he dodges the questions I ask? Really, it is just a simple Google search and having a rudimentary knowledge of how the ratings system works.

It premiered with about 4.3 and peaked at about 4.5, and has steadily fallen within those two numbers for every new episode save a few (by a few I mean three episodes, those had between 3.5 and 3.9). The repeats have all gotten in the 2-2.5 range. Now, last years finale landed in the 3.8 range (which is about the range for some of the lesser watched episodes this year). Last year there was a season high of 4.8 I think, I know it was close to 5, but the post-strike episodes all fell around the same numbers as the season finale. So, are ratings down? Yes, from their season high of last season and the averages of the earlier seasons, however, like I said, ratings for ALL TV have fallen since the strike. Since the strike and the last five episodes of last season though, Smallville has shown small gains. Yeah, a handful of episodes dropped, but the show bounced back from those and has consistently fallen around 4.3. That’s definitely UP from the end of last season. Finale’s usually post pretty big numbers, Smallville got 3.8, and like I said has steadilly gotten in the 4.3 range this year.

I keep repeating myself only in the hopes that somehow that makes you (Nic) understand it better.

Oh, and guess how many viewers the Season 1 finale got when it debuted?

If you said 3.8, well, you’d be dead on balls accurate. However Season one averaged 5.9, Season 2 averaged 6.3, Season 3 averaged 4.9, Season 4 averged 4.4, Season 5 averaged 4.7, Season 6 averaged 4.1, and Season 7 averaged 3.7. Wanna guess this season’s average so far? 4.2 buddy, the best since season 5. Granted we’ve got 8 episodes to go, so who knows where it’ll end up, but the show has held steady this year, so I doubt it’ll finish below the 4.1 mark, hell, it might finish close to 4.5.

Are the ratings down? Yup, from their highest point, most definitely, but they are up significantly from last year.

See, I did my homework and yours. So, kindly shut the hell up.

  18. Logan says:

As for the Chloe argument? huh? You say I’m write and then defend yourself by saying that that doesn’t stop you from saying otherwise…what?

And, yeah I said they were up significantly, which is overstating it, so my bad on that, but, again, the ratings are up this year.

  19. Logan says:

And as a side note to anyone who actually cares about the real ratings, if you do your research, Smallville was doing extremely well last year before they announced the strike. Going into episode 9 they hade an average of 4.5, which puts it well ahead of this season, and on par to maybe beat season 5, but if you look at the ratings, after the strike talk began it became a slow decline and viewers dropped off. Didn’t help that the show had such a long break last season either, I think that really killed the momentum of viewers. That strike was just nasty for everybody.

  20. Rich says:

i hope Kara returns in season 9 i miss her in season 8 alot.

  21. Logan says:

Agreed Rich!!! I really didn’t think I was going to like the addition of her, but I took the wait and see route as always and was surprised with what they did.

Maybe we’ll get to see more of the Phantom Zone too!

  22. Cylon Betty says:

Yay!!!!! Another season of Smallville. This is good news. That is all. :)

  23. Nic says:

Lol…You seem worked up by my opinion Logan!!
    haaaaaaaaaa
Could it because i am right….Sorry you have no defense..You are full of craptacularness!!
looks to me like someone is taking things personal huh..lol
    Look here Logan..
Let me make it easy for you…I will say what i want..When i want..And there is nothing you can do but B*th and Whine..Wait…
Something you accuse me of doing ..Wow..That is too funny..
Here is a fact for you maybe to hard to swallow..You Will fail to stop me and anyone who wants to voice an opinion..

  24. Nic says:

Are the ratings down? Yup, from their highest point, most definitely, but they are up significantly from last year.

lol…Really you could have fooled me Logan..
So wait are you agreeing with me?
    hummmmmmmm..

  25. Nic says:

it’s pretty obvious this guy is either an idiot or he’s screwing with us.

Lol when one resort to name calling you know they are totally insecure and full of Cow dung!
    haaaaaaaaaaaa

  26. Dan says:

It is simply incredibly how quickly *any* Smallville talkback degenerates into this idiocy. Um…how about I just say “YES!! SEASON 9!!!” since the entire point of this thread has apparently now been entirely lost.

  27. Zhengyingli says:

Now they have the chance to do something about the boom tube. If not, let’s hope we get to see a kryptonite-powered terminator.

  28. Logan says:

My apologies to everyone for even engaging this guy in the first place. I forgot about all the idiots on the internet that don’t understand logic, or English for that matter.

  29. Nic says:

forgot about all the idiots on the internet that don’t understand logic, or English for that matter.

    haaaaaaaa How big of you!
    Small Penis Logan?
No wonder you get worked up..
It was you who went off on me ..Sorry ?…you should be sorry..
Seems you can’t handle the heat..
    engaging?
Please..I never set out to embarrass myself as you have done to yourself..i just made a comment you couldn’t take..haaaaaaaaa
    Now where were we..
Yes we have Smallville for another season..
    No Doomsday..his contract ends in 8th season..Yes Logan..That is a fact..
The TPTB might bring him back in S9..Who knows..
    Not you for sure..haaaaaaaaaaa

  30. Derek R. says:

Alright, and everyone say bye to Nic everyone! Thanks for playing Nic but when the name calling and stuff gets out of hand and becomes derogatory comments; the host pulls the plug :)

  31. Superclerk says:

    Wow… that was funny.
I’m glad there is another season coming as well as more SHOE out there for us to listen to. I would dig Kara coming back and the Legion… and JLA… and everyone else…

  32. Nic says:

lol Thanks DerickR..It seems to missed Logan’s remarks as well ..Over sight?
    haaaaaaaa
    hummmm
Anyways..Yes we all are glad for another season of Smallville..No plug pulling there..
No Doomsday for Season 9 Well So i have heard..Humm
i wonder who will be the Villain for that season..Well that is if they reconsider and bring back Doom..

  33. Anthony says:

Yay! This is great news. To me, anything super hero related is a good thing. I jsut read something about actors being contracted for 2 seasons, hence some rumors about maybe season 9 not even being the last! opinions?

  34. Anthony says:

PS. Derek and Steve: Do we really have to wait another 2 weeks for an episode of SHOE? :(

  35. Derek says:

Nic, I’m just asking everyone to play nice, not singling anyone out. Really don’t want to go through and delete comments so long as it’s a healthy conversation.

As far as any ‘actual’ discussion going on in the mess above me, contracts: It’s undecided who won’t be returning at this point. Rumors are going around that Sam Witwer won’t be returning but if the recent Warner Bros contract negotiations are true, talent has to sign for two years…so Witwer would’ve had to sign for s8 and s9. No definitive word on that yet, however.

As for Chloe / Lois? Chloe will always be Chloe Sullivan, she was never intended to end up as Lois Lane. It’s been said time and time again by all the showrunners, past and present. For the Chloe fans that are just dying for her to be Lois however, tune into 8×17 ‘Hex’ for a great nod to a very devoted fanbase.

And yes, SHoE won’t return until “Infamous” airs in March. We’ll see you then! In the meantime, head on over to our forums for other great discussions!

  36. Nic says:

As for Chloe / Lois? Chloe will always be Chloe Sullivan, she was never intended to end up as Lois Lane

    I disagree..But i respect your opinion..
Yes Chloe is the best written character on the show..And a huge fan fav..
TPTB will never get rid of her because she has a huge fan base..And they know that.
As for the Lois lane debate we all know it can go on and on..I don’t hate the current Lois..
But as i said..You and i don’t know what the writers will come up with..Never rule anything out.It is TV after all….And as for what they say..Well they can say anything..How many times have we seen Clark and Land Break up?
Didn’t She leave only to return ..And i am sure she will come back yet again!
And anyways the front runners only know what the writers tell them..and from reading the script ..And stranger things have happened..
    It ain’t over Yet..

  37. Derek says:

Wait wait wait…the front runners only know what the writers tell them?

Nic, do you have any idea how a television series works? Showrunners: People who “run” the show. Sorry, I usually don’t get into debates like this but it is a definitive case both with Al and Miles (the CREATORS of the series) and now Todd, Darren, Kelly, and Brian….Chloe no equal Lois, Chloe equal Chloe, Lois equal Lois.

  38. Alman says:

I swear to God this Nic guy is not me.
He’s got me beat by a long shot.

At least BigHonkin has something for his next soapbox, that is if you don’t want to take it Derek.

    IT’S ALMAN4 EVERYBODY! ;)

  39. Nic says:

Hello Dereck..Listen i don’t want to argue with you..So here is my opinion whether you want it or not..You can disagree or not..I don’t care..
    Chloe Is better than Lois..
Sorry the writers even Made Lana even better than Lois..Clark can’t have Lana so he has to settle for Lois..sad but true..
Chloe has more fans than any of the actors on Smallville..Again i say TPTB will Never Ever get rid off her..NEVER!!
Actually Al and Miles don’t run the show anymore..
And No…. the actors have not much say in what happens to their characters.. Front runner or not..neither as to how far they progress..It is up to the writers and TPTB!!
And Chloe still reigns supreme over The current Lois!!
Sorry on the show Lois is not even in Chloe’s league!!
    HAve you seen Lois lately..Haaaaaaaa
    NO!!
She is 3rd Banana on the show..

  40. Nic says:

    Let me list the bananas..

    Clark
    Chloe
    Lana
    Doomsday
    Lois
    Jimmy
..So actually she is 5th Banana..lol

  41. Derek says:

No, actually Nic – I wasn’t discussing actors, which character I like better, or who has more fans. I’m not talking about who is better written for, who has more screen time, or who has been there for longer. In fact, I’m not even stating an opinion: I am stating what has been said since the beginning of the series. The people in charge of the show, the s-h-o-w-r-u-n-n-e-r-s, the e-x-e-c-u-t-i-v-e p-r-o-d-u-c-e-r-s, who r-u-n the s-h-o-w and are over the w-r-i-t-e-r-s have stated, on multiple occasions, that Chloe Sullivan, was never intended, nor ever will be, Lois Lane. I’m not getting in any kind of discussion over who is better on the show, which character is better for Clark, or who gets what billing, just that Chloe is not Lois…it’s been said, printed, and shown.

Oh trust me, I know Al and Miles don’t run the show anymore, and I know who they left it to. I talk about this series on a weekly basis and have for almost 3 years now, in addition to writing for DC Comics if you remember correctly. I know the subject matter well, so this isn’t some half-hearted fan biased opinion. Simple fact.

  42. Scott says:

Hey Derek, thanks for putting up with Nic and his very annoying opinions and lack of common sense. You have a lot more restraint in words than I would have.

  43. Derek says:

Thanks Scott, I’m not bashing anyone’s opinions, just trying to clear up a very narrow way of thinking. Though I feel a new episode of SHoE coming about very soon LOL

  44. The0racle says:

Hey guys pumped for season 9 .

  45. Fredrik says:

    Dear Nic.

Stop being an ignorant slut. Surely there will be lots of nude Chlois photoshops you can create friction to long after the show is over.

  46. Marc Vibbert says:

I leave for a little while and I miss all of this? Darnit!

  47. Heidi says:

I think if the showrunners say it, it’s true. The whole Chloe is Lois theory went out the window when Lois showed up on the show.

And back on the original topic, yay for season 9. I hope we get more Justice League.

  48. Superclerk says:

Holy crap. Are you serious? Does he really think…? I can’t…
Wow. I’ve heard rumors of such folk but never actually believed they existed. I thought it was a joke.

    Wow.

It must not be painful to be so ignorant… cause if it did I’m sure they would stop.

    Again… wow.

  49. Scott says:

I have watched smallville from the very begining but I did not discover this podcast until summer 07. There are some people with a somewhat negative attitude ( NIC) but for the most part people are glad for a 9th season which is one reason I listen to this podcast. If Derek or Steve do not like something they talk about what could have been changed and move on without harping on something they did not like. The last two episodes Steve did not like as much as some but he went in with a postitive attitude and went over the episode fairly. I just don’t understand people who watch every week just so they can blog or post negative comments on the forums. On a different note I’m glad the writers will have time now to end the series on a good note instead of not knowing and having it end without any closure at all. I know you guys like to keep your podcast numbers line up with the episode (LOL) but it would be cool to see one before March 12th.
