Tim’s “Fierce” Review

smallville_fierce_049.jpg So what did Tim think of this episode?

A lackluster freak-of-the-week episode or did it keep the momentum of the season up?

This episode was a very interesting one, to say the least. To be truthful, I don’t know what to think of this one. It had some things going for it, but it had so many things that just were not good at all.

One of those that was not good at all was actually the main plot of the episode. The main plot of the episode, being the notorious Weather Girls entering the Smallville Miss Sweet Corn pageant. Now, last season of Smallville, we had 2 episodes that could’ve been seen as cross-promotion, when WWE wrestlers Batista and Kane were cast as escaped criminals from the Phantom Zone. That was a cross-promotion that didn’t draw too much attention to itself, because it blended well with the story. I give credit to the writers for trying to blend in these Weather Girls into the story, but it just did not work for me. Also, it seemed like it was a promo to watch America’s Next Top Model, as it was actually mentioned early in the episode.

But there were a lot of things that did work for me. One thing that worked for me was the Kryptonian aspect of this episode, which actually surprised me. I thought that the episode was not really going anywhere as far as our meteor-freakish models were concerned, and they pulled this Kryptonian aspect of the episode out of the hat, too., by saying that the pendant found in the secret treasure box was left by a Kryptonian over a hundred years ago, opening a new can of worms for the season, suggesting that there may be another Kryptonian, who might’ve been on Earth longer than Clark. So it could make for a very interesting dynamic later in the season.

Now, for me, in this episode, the main thing that seemed to be the focus of this episode was the kind-of brother/sister dynamic that Clark and Kara seem to have. I like how Clark kind of took on the role of mentor and father to Kara, in the same way that Jonathan Kent did to Clark. It was very interesting to see a kind of reversal of roles a bit. I totally loved the scenes with Kara and Clark. To me, it was totally obvious that these two were part of the same family.

Another dynamic that was very interesting in this episode was the dynamic between Lex and Kara, which could be very interesting if it develops. Lex seems to know that it was absolutely Kara that saved him from the river, and it will be interesting to see if Kara will completely trust Lex as Clark did. It is very unlikely that she will, since she has something that Clark didn’t have, someone who has dealt with Lex: Clark. This Kara/Lex dynamic shall be very intriguing, indeed.

One dynamic that came back in this episode was the Clark and Lana relationship. This relationship, often termed as “Clana”, actually seemed a bit stronger than it usually is, as both Clark and Lana are both bringing things to the table. Now that Lana knows Clark’s secret, it is something new for Clark, as she is provide Clark with some advice on how to handle Kara amongst other things.

Another thing about Lana that I noticed was she definitely seemed a little darker. That was one thing that I really enjoyed about this episode, and it really showed during the scene with Lex and Lana. Both Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk acted well in this scene. You can definitely tell that through the tempestuous they had the past season had changed both Lex and Lana as characters. It shall be fun to see how their characters will cope with their relationship, as Lana is a little darker as a result, but has Lex completely turned over a new leaf as a result?

This episode was directed by Whitney Ransick, who has directed such favorites as Oracle, Hidden, and Labyrinth. He seemed to get just what was needed for the more emotional scenes in this episode out of the actors.

This episode was pretty good, but it almost seemed the various subplots with Clark and Kara, and Lex seemed to drive the episode more so than the actual main plot of the episode, which was kind of odd. But it definitely did move the plot of the season in a general forward direction with the same momentum that has been kept up by the first two episodes.

RATING: 3/5

I totally agree, I did not like the Weather Girl plot at all, it was almost cheesy to mention America’s Next Top Model in the early part of the show, but then again I thought the small parts where it was just one on one dialogue, for example with Kara and Lex and With Lana and Clark were really good.
